bring back the old dubstep knowledge question, add a captcha, and implement an approval system if it's so worryingseckle wrote:fractal wrote:I'm sure y'all would let us know if you do it, as we'll need to make the proper security preperations for any unforeseen attacks.
NOTHING is being changed. NOTHING. Rest assured. This is only a poll, to see if there's enough people that think it would help with the trolling, and general discussion level on this site. Some of these brand new alias accounts created only to start problems, needs to be sorted one way or another.
naming and shaming, in some sort of published list...is NOT a solution.
or have a set given amount of time/posts before a user can start topics, but not reply to threads (time being the one that is better)
personally i think you should just expand the mod team some more if you guys are so swamped, either that or actually show people how the reporting system works to make things less a headache for you guys.
Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
IP's can be changed so easily, not even worth it.
Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
Is it possible to limit logins to 1 per IP?

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
naming and shaming in effect means that the forum would be handing out penalties, and turning the atmosphere of this site into a tabloid newspaper. even now the most innocuous and basic moderation done anywhere, turns into a ridiculous bitch and moan match. now imagine that a list of trolls gets posted....we'd be building a platform for a bunch of babies to take over. this IP thing, turns it into a proactive move, where personal accountability, replaces probably 75% of the problems facing the moderating team, because as I said earlier, these trolls have nothing to lose. they can hide behind computers and screens, meanwhile an 18 page thread about "DJ ABC is shit" remains an artifact that can be found via google...forever. is that fair?
the rules give the moderators the right to "name and shame".

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
having people's ip listed is essentially throwing someone to the wolves while absolving the moderation team of any responsibility though, which is a fate worse than naming and shaming.
and if a thread started by dj abc saying xyz is shit being on google can change someone's opinion on music they genuinely like
i feel bad for the future of society. the days of this forum being all positive and good vibes like back when are longgg gone and that is due to dubstep gaining popularity especially on the web front. seriously as much as people hate to admit it, these board is essentially the same as DOA now just with more sub forums. hell over on the production sub forum we're pretty good at self moderating each other. there are always going to be trolls, there are preventative measures you can take to make it harder to post or use aliases just to post a xyz is shit thread, but proposing this system is as you said laughable.

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I would say a lot of people on this forum probabably have a static address, for port forwarding purposes

there is code to do that but it has severe impact on the servers. it would slow down the forum in a big way.jagermikester wrote:Is it possible to limit logins to 1 per IP?
Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
As a producer, DJ and long time DSF lurker i would love to see a move towards user responsibility here. There has already been a huge move by artist away from the board during the years as there's bare comedians around and interent comedy is one difficult art. The signal to noise ratio here is astoundingly bad nowadays, but it has to be said it's good to still see people talk about music here too which was the original purpose of the board (instead of daycare).
Supporting Seckle on this one. Maybe with the partial IP addresses to prevent some of the issues discussed here. It won't solve everything but a superimposed banning policy, shame list or whatnot would end in next level whining.
Just my two cents, don't get aggy over this please. (Just having to write a disclaimer like that says something about the state of affairs here don't it?)

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I think a lot of people would stop coming here or posting if their IP was shown to anybody who wanted to see it. I dunno, maybe it's common knowledge and easy for anybody to get anyway, but it definitely worries me.

People are always going to talk shit on the internet. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.
Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I can only see 1 account per IP working tbh, revealing is a bit much for many.

simple solution, don't take the bait
if it looks like a troll, if it smells like a troll, if it lives under a bridge with wifi access...

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I'm all for user responsibility, but there has to be a way of showing who people are without showing ip addresses, even partially. How about that? The memberlist could link all shared ip adresses without actualy displaying them?seckle wrote:yes man! this is what I mean!desto wrote:user responsibility here.

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
My computer is quite secure and I still wouldn't like my IP to be publicly available.
Not to mention if anybody truly wants to troll it's far from difficult to change an IP address nowadays. Not to mention I doubt that all of the trolls and moaners are actually somebody's alternate account. If they are somebody's alternate account...it's probably the alt to an account belonging to somebody who doesn't really care if they're found out as 'the guy who made those posts'.
I highly doubt it would stop or slow down anything... I'd worry about things like the forums being attacked and infecting people with malware and losing information from it's database every few weeks than a few trolls...
Just ignore trolls.
