i'm for better moderation and naming and shaming people or having aliases at a click, just there's no reason to post anyone's ip in the process
if people had smarter browsing skills and were more security conscious there would be no reason for me to even list potential problems

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I'm wholly against it - if the current mods and admins can't do the job themselves then we need to appoint some new ones. Making IP's accessible to just anybody on a forum as big as this is a bad idea.
p.s. also a fan of Pkay's suggestion.

Bolsty - this very thing (reorganization of the forum, especially the general "dubstep" area) is something i've suggested -- with detailed solutions -- [privately] months ago....and nothing has happened.bolsty wrote: agree with this,
Dubstep knowledge question is a good idea, too many clueless people signing up and starting stupid threads, not reading the rules etc. etc.
Not only that, but for fuck sake organise the forum better. The one general "dubstep" area is chaos, why not seperate it into "releases" "gen discussion" and so on and so forth, i participate in forums far bigger then this and moderation and organisation is the key to a well run forum, seems like theres plenty of members who've been here for a long while, are level headed and have a shitload of knowledge, wouldn't be hard finding people keen to help clean this place up?
Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
well there's only so much people can do then i suppose eh? maybe it is time to get some more active moderators on board, as the size of the forum increases then so should the amount of moderators, perhaps allocating certain sections to certain moderators would be helpful, i've seen this work quite effectively elsewhere.joenice wrote:Agreed.cosmic surgeon wrote:Making IP's accessible to just anybody on a forum as big as this is a bad idea.

This IP idea just seems like a bit of a bandaid solution and will probably cause more friction then already exists, it may deter some people but it's not going to sort out the mess of threads.

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
The old Breaks Fm website ran in a more detailed section format, there were over 20 different forums on the site, we had a strong team of mods that were fans of the music that policed the site and then a strong team of admins that made the decisions and site changes etc. I can proudly say that it was a great community with very very limited trolling or negativity.
We had a zero tolerance policy on douchebags, 3 strikes system that worked very well. It cut out all the people that were just there to cause shit and left a great community of music lovers.
I'd be happy to advise or get involved in that respect, holla!

In my opinion, that's not nearly enough moderation and/or admin to manage this forum....especially a forum of this size.
Your allocation idea -- there are certain sections for which that practice is being executed. It's working....
From what I have experienced, the main issue on the forum is the "dubstep" section. If that area was better administered (not necessarily moderated), a lot of the complaints and disputes in this thread (and others) would be drastically reduced.
In the past, I've suggested [with other mods and admin]:
1. Eliminating hype threads in the main forum.
2. Releases vs dubs.
3. Eliminating appreciation threads.
4. A twitter widget.
5. A dubstepforum.com IRC chatroom
6. eliminating the NSFW area entirely. (Sure, it's not the dubstep section, but we're discussing organization of the forum.)
7. Creation of a dubstep section (once reorganized) and a separate brostep/filth section.
Ultimately, reading FAQ's, using the "search" function and having a bit of sense would curb some issues also.

it's painfully obvious that this won't happen though. it's easily done but people still end up replyingaftee wrote:Just ignore trolls.
tricky to get right but worth looking into it. a troll is likely to be a douchebag so should solve that problem... but like i said it's tricky to get right without it turning into something that could be quite negativehellfire machina wrote:We had a zero tolerance policy on douchebags, 3 strikes system that worked very well. ultimately it comes down to user responsibility but it's clear that a lot of people don't have any of that. hard core moderation isn't the key but some other active mods can only be a good thing

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
Badger - We implemented it from the get go, indeed it will take a little time for it to be effective now and you will see a decrease in traffic at first but it's worth it.
We didn't have a long list of rules or anything, it was pretty simple and common sense, be respectful to each other regardless of sharing the same opinions, keep it constructive in terms of critique. We had a seperate forum for moaning, any thread that was negative for the sake of it got moved there without notification. Anything abusive was met with a warning, 3 strikes meant a perma ban. We ended up with over 20,000 music lovers and it was a great community to be a part of. You'll see results within the first day.
I'd be happy to discuss it more with you if you wish. Feel free to hit me up on aim anytime - hellfiremachina (ask for Jody)

As a starter, the mods could lock that doctor p - big boss thread. nothing useful in there at all, just full of hate comments. having that much hate isn't really a good look for this forum is it...?

Re: Slowing down forum trolls and cowards
I don't want my IP public - that would be a crazy move for the forum!
A community needs mutual trust, and revealing everyone's IPs is the exact opposite of trust.
You need more moderators, that's all.
I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but I never see Vaccine or Conspira post, so I'd guess they don't really visit or moderate the forum to any serious degree any more. Boomnoise and Bunzero have gone...you need more mods, it doesn't take a genius to work that out.
Thinking and Badger seem to be reliable for locking threads and general mod work, but the fact of the matter is that 6 mods is nowhere near enough!
You fucked up when you took the forum offline and you fucked up with that whole 'The Bash' thing (is that where all the mods spend their time by the way?) so please don't fuck up on the IP thing! You need at least 15 dedicated mods, and maybe a few subforums of the dubstep section.
