Scuba pretty much nailed it. I fail to see how Rinse can take any legal action whatsoever when they are operating outside of the law themselves.

Lol at trying to do this on a corporate level. Ammunition can get taken down due to their ownership of rinse fm an illegal piraate.
I'll speak to a few lawyer buddies at work tomorrow see what the coup is.
Gotta have everything law friendly, rule number 1 when it comes to stuff like this.
Wonder how many of the labels are registered or the dj's paying taxes? Word of warning chaps u will get fucked over very hard if u don't go kosher

It seems like PR isn't high on their business priorities. Way to damage a reputation. Shit like this sticks, the longer its left without the other side of the story - and god forbid, perhaps even an apology to deapoh for a shitty phonecall - the worse it gets.

To be honest, Deapoh seems about 6 million times more organised and able to deliver what people want than the ammo camp anyway. Give it a couple years and I'm sure he'll be running things. Good luck with the legal Funky House station, I'm sure it'll be great

Without Deapoh I would never have had the opportunity to discover so many talented producers and DJs on this side of the creek, nor would they have had the chance to play at our events in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. DMZ got me infected with dubstep, Barefiles got me properly hooked.

Might I suggest you to take a look at UbuWeb? A wonderful example of a gift economy, freed from profit-making constraints:

"UbuWeb has no need for money, funding or backers. Our web space is provided by an alliance of interests sympathetic to our vision. Donors with an excess of bandwidth contribute to our cause. All labour and editorial work is voluntary; no money changes hands. Totally independent from institutional support, UbuWeb is free from academic bureaucracy and its attendant infighting, which often results in compromised solutions; we have no one to please but ourselves."

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have such a website, that would manage the growing collection of dubstep history, almost museum-like? I believe we had one for quite a while with Barefiles. For me it is quite fair to say that I could only have studied the DJs and producers I admire by means of downloads from Barefiles. Out of this came a couple of events in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with nine different artists in the last eight months already, and the list is growing. A site like Barefiles has been vital for the dissemination of dubstep internationally, and for promoters it is the best way to check out a DJ without having to fly out to London. Blocking this infrastructure for the last few months has been an impediment for fans and professionals alike.

I have no solution for the economic matters in the current music industry (apart from the mantra 'pay the poet'), but I do commemorate your integrity Deapoh. Hopefully you can continue building your online dubstep museum. We will be visiting.

Big up and respect to you Deapoh for all your hardwork - recording and archiving mixes from across the dubstep spectrum and for hosting my mixes in the past.

Thanks for explaining your side of the story openly to us.

I hope in the long run this is all resolved amicably. It would be nice if the values of cooperation and respect win out here and the big picture is taken into consideration by Rinse management.

In North America the dubstep music community is still in its early stages of development and sites like Barefiles have been and continue to be a large factor in spreading it here, providing fertilizer for a young scene to grow.

It is important, imo, that fans in the US and across the globe have access to an archive that allows time shifting and device shifting of a wide variety of broadcasts and streams - including Rinse's - in a free and easily accesible location and format in order to continue feeding the growth of the community.

The continuation of this service from a proven and reliable resource, not to mention a well known and established brand, like Barefiles will help us here in North America continue to build the infrastructure necessary to facilitate the growth of a self supporting community. I think it will actually HELP and has HELPED Rinse and Ammunition in the the short and long run, by providing the growth necessary for there to be venues and audiences for dj's and producers from the Rinse/Ammunition/Tempa umbrella and other broadcast organizations and labels to play to.

This service was offered for free by various individuals and it helped the growth of all of the dubstep labels and agencies and clubs involved with this music.

Why not stick with the spirit of the community and work together to help dubstep grow? Why not passively allow the utilization of this free and easy marketing tool? Resisting it by attempting to control content that is essentially public domain as soon as it hits the airwaves and or fiber optic cables and is recieved into the radios and computers of thousands of potential consumers does not seem very wise to me.

I think that by following this spirit of cooperation that we can all have our bass and eat it too.

Barefiles.com has been my dubstep education. Simple as.

Its not always practical to listen to Rinse. I'm not always around/able to get reception in order to catch my favourite DJs.

Barefiles.com addressed this. And it was always KEPT UP TO DATE.

Deapoh you have my total respect. This thread was a brave and honest move.

I got a phone call from gee last night. A representative from Rinse, NOT Gee, will be posting in reply so hold tight.

To all the FWD heads I am no longer allowed to go so I will see you lot at DMZ, Corsica, Kontakt and many other Dubstep nights!

The less I talk about the phone call the better but he made it very clear how he felt.
