How-To : Properly Use Google....

Post by legend4ry » Tue Oct 12, 2010 7:24 pm

To your advantage as an artist.

Google is a very extensive tool these days with their latest updates making it EVEN easier for us to keep tabs on how our music is doing in the internet world.

I'm going to break this down into 2 sections : Alerts & Searches.

Part 1 : Google Alerts - For those who don't know about this, you'll really be able to keep tabs on yourself now!

Step 1 : Set up a google account.

Go to : https://www.google.com/accounts/Login

Image

If you already have a google account, sign in if not, make one!

Step 2 : Open the alert application for your google account.

Image

Step 3 : Set up an Alert.

Image

Obviously, substitute Legend4ry for your own name :).

You can also set up a forwarding email address via your google account, if you don't want to check your gmail every time you want to see if you got an alert but if you're like me and use Desktop emailing then just add it to your accounts.

So what does this ACTUALLY do?

Every time a new hit appears on google, including what you input the alert as (in my case, Legend4ry) you get sent an email telling you what website the content appears on.

Part 2 : Searching - taking advantage of Google's new filters.

What a lot of people from what I have seen haven't realized is that google has recently (in the last couple of months) made it 20 times easier to filter what kind of thing you're searching for... So heres just a quick over view :).

Image

So for a quick run down...

Everything means - Well, everything.

Video means - Shows ALL video websites which contain a video what has the word you searched

Images - All images with your search word as the title/some relevance.

Maps - Not important

News - Searches all the main News websites.

Shopping - Not important.

Books - Not important, unless you're being published :P.

Blogs - Searches all the main blog portals. Wordpress, Blogger, Tumblr and any website what has itself as Blog.

Updates - Searches Twitter.

Discussions - Searches forums.

Hope this little tutorial helps! :)

Yeah, im signed up to google alerts.

Amazing what appears on dodgy mp3 sites !

BTW, if you want a string use quotes, eg "paradigm x" , "ham vst", "deadly habit" etc.

Shamelessly copied from DOA:
-----------------------
so let's say you need some snares. type in the following:

?intitle:index.of? wav snare

------------------------

realised you can of course search for anything,

like substituting 'wav' for 'mpg' or 'avi'

and substituting 'snare' for 'brunette' or 'oral'

-----------------------

Hand type the following prefixes and note their utility:

link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.

related:url same as "what's related" on serps.

site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.

allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.

inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.

allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.

intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.

cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.

info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.

spell: will spell check your query and search for it.

stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.

filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.

daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.

maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.

phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)

site:www.somesite.net "+www.somesite.+net"
(tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google)

allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title

allinlinks: searches only within links, not text or title
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

i loled when i read the thread title ...

heres another cool tip

if i just googled for trip addict ... it would bring me back loads of shit i dont want

so instead use this ... "trip+addict" ... in double quotes only returns results matching the exact string the + symbol means only return articles with both words in sequence ;)

handy for filtering results :D

Try this, go to beatport, type the name of the artist you want tunes of into the beatport search bar. Now click on purchase and enter your registration/bank details. Job done.

Well, theres a way around that...

Set a alert up for all your track names - 'least then you can keep tabs on your tunes !
