Have you thought about buying an old gameboy and some music cartridges for it?

This.

'magical8bitplug' is made by the chiptune band YMCK, and it's proper sick :D It's basically like a gameboy on your PC... Music-wise ofc ;)

Check it here; http://www.ymck.net/magical8bitplug/index.html (Beware the page is in Japanese, but I have Google toolbar and that was able to translate it no problem :D)

I might be repeating some of the earlier suggestions, but here are the links for my 8bit plugin collection (all freeware as well!)

unknown64 http://www.odosynths.com/vst.htm
toad http://www.tweakbench.com/toad
triforce http://www.tweakbench.com/triforce
se64 http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1615.html
basic64 http://www.delamancha.co.uk/basic.htm
minisid http://www.delamancha.co.uk/miniSID.htm

some are better than others for different things, the best is to mess around and see which works best

and i think magical8bitplugin has been mentioned enough already, great plugin tho :D

I find that layering some white noise very quietly with the synth can create some sweet sounds, plus bitcrusher.

Its really just a matter of clicking "load" and finding the waveform you want
I think the ones you listed are all paid synths, Atlantis can do this for free!
