I am going to go against the grain here and piss a few people off perhaps? I have Vinyl decks and love them dearly... BUT its getting downright ridiculous getting vinyls. Firstly they end up being *VERY* expensive after a while... but my main point is i get so fed up of tunes that i want to play not getting a vinyl release it puts me off vinyl all together sometimes. Feel so limited.

They all say Cdj's are the future... Though i don't really get on with them but seeing as they would be your first decks you wouldn't have this problem.
You could get vinyl decks then fork out £500 for serato... Then you have the freedom of cdj's with the vinyl feel.

Either:
Second hand 1210's plus serato.
Pioneer CDJ (any model will suffice as a begginer).

The colour - 1200s are silver, 1210s have a matt black finish.


In answer to OP, if you're set on using vinyl/serato, a pair of 2nd hand 1210s should set you back about £400/$600 if you look around hard enough. Local free ad papers often give better results then the bigger sites like eBay/CraigsList/Gumtree etc, as you'll get people selling in them who often don't know exactly what they've got.

Failing that, some of the older 'high end' turntables like the Numark TTX1 & Vestax PDX2000 could probably be swung for slightly under this price, though I'd recommend you have a play around on them if possible so you know what it is you're buying. If you choose to go down the Serato root, then the money saved could go towards a laptop to let you manipulate your digital tracks via an analog controller.

The good thing about buying 2nd hand turntables that are of a high quality, is that the resale value often maintains at what you paid for them within a 4-8 month period, meaning if you buy them & decide they're not right for you, you can sell them on without taking too much of a hit.

my numark tt200 and nmx400 have not failed me yet. The vinyl/cdj combo seems like a good balance to me.

i want turntables because i wanted to start out original like every other dj but i looks like using a cdj would be much easier and not that big of a difference?

Maybe even less. People are dumping them like a bad habit. Have seen 300 for a pair in mint shape. So crazy. I don't see anything wrong with a n00b buying decks. Fuck the future do what you want!

I just started, like less than a week ago and my total set up has cost me £124 (not including vinyl). But I got 2 turntables off a friend for £50 and work great and then a Numark M2 mixer for £74 off the net and so far it definitely does the job for me. I think if I do really pick this up though I'll buy Technics 1210 and then upgrade my mixer but for starters, it's good. So if you ain't sure...have a look around for cheap turntables, off a friend or locally and then do some research before you buy them. Then if you do pick it up properly, upgrade in a year or so.

Vinyl is expensive however but it's the way I am choosing to play and a lot of the dubstep I like is vinyl only (admittedly a lot is also digi only) so could possibly consider Serato but thats in the far, far future.

That's my two cents man.

TL;DR: Stick with vinyl and do it as cheap as possible!

Are you planning to mix or scratch? I'll assume it's a bit of both.
For the Decks.
I would recomend the Numark TT500, it's got one of the best torque ratings out there, assignable start / stop times, 50% pitch range, interchangeable tone arms, and their not all that expensive.
Anything by Vestax would be a good choice, I just picked up a pair of PDT5000's for $120 CAD. They are old decks from the 90's but they are still solid. I definetly prefer my TT500 for scratching tho.
Stantons are priced pretty good, but I am not such a big fan of their turntables except for the STR8-150 which I consider one of the best out there.
Evrybody will say get Technics, which is fine, they made a superior table back in the 70's and have done very little in terms of updating. Personally I think they are over rated, but thats just my opinion. The best thing they have going for them is reliability and ease of finding parts.

For mixers pretty much anything by Vestax would be a good choice. Numark and Stanton both make good mixers but I would try to stay away from their base models. You choice will again depend on if you want a straight up no frills battle mixer or a fx laced monster. You might want a 3 or more channel mixer if you plan to hookup the computer or other sources.

I would also recomend buying used so your selection will depend on fate, just google for reviews or ask here about specific models. If you buy used and decide the DJ game was not for you, you should be able to get most if not all of your money back when you sell. Buy new and decide you don't want to do it and try to sell expect to lose out on cash.

i say read a lot... but the best way for u to decide is to try... seriously... try to get ur hands on various models... ull know what ull like... and u want to be spending a long time bent over those things so make sure u palpate them properly first..

this thread seems to be a lot about turntables... but think about the mixer too... ull fuck around with the mixer a lot more then with the turntable itself... even if u cut...
