Yay or Nay : Gemini PS-626 DJ Mixer

Post by Basic A » Tue Oct 19, 2010 6:12 am

http://www.audiolines.com/DJ-Gear/DJ-Mi ... -PS-626EFX
Very straightforward question, in the market for something around the 150 dollar pricerange to hold me over until I finish building a custom, so figure it has to last about a year, little more little less. Has to be a 3 channel and has to have a filter, idc about the flanger/phasers, but a filter is a must. And has to have both master + recording outs, because the one I have now does, and Im not re-arranging the 2-room setup. Wont be travelling anywhere, just a practice deal for at home...

Concerns : Fader and amp lives, eq quality, fader bleeding, and then effects quality, in that order...

Anyone willing to give me a go for it bearing all this in mind, or anyone willing to suggest a better option? Im not budget flexible, but if anyone knows anything in the price range that'd be better =) ...

N uhh... anything used I should know about floating about? :)

Never ever EVER waste money on a Behringer DJ mixer. They are utter shite, worse build quality I've ever seen.

Definitely, pretty much all Behringer gear is BOLLOX. Never, ever buy one of their mixers.

Yeah, Behringers are utter trash. Plasticy feel to them, and the fx on that one that ripped off the DJM600 were god damn awful!

I'd say yay on the Gemini tbh. Owned one about 10 years ago, was pretty much identical in spec minus the effects. Got at least a year out of it before the crossfader started bleeding (after lots of over-enthusiasic fader bashing!). The channel faders started to go a bit after that, but i suppose it was nothing an air duster couldn't have sorted. I quite liked the EQs on it aswell but was a novice at the time so may no be as good as I remember.

And that was 10 years ago so the quality should have improved since.

Oh right

Yeah, my first mixer was a Gemini battle mixer, PMX-140 I think waaaaay back when it first came out. Solid bit of kit, had it for like 3yrs before selling it on when I upgraded. No degradation on the crossfader, all buttons stayed on, plus it only depreciated by like £50 from buying it new to selling it on. Highly recommend them.

I think Geneni is shit. But if it's just supposed to last for a year I'm sure it won't crap out on you. Are you only looking to buy new? If not get on craigslist and see whats available. But I guess it's not going to be that easy to find something that fits all your requirements.

Hey. Ive had a different experience with Gemini. My first DJ setup was all gemini. I personally feel its a low tier brand. Similar to Behringer like you were saying. While this mixer looks way more legit than the one I had, dont be suprised if you get what you pay for... This mixer is quite inexpensive compared to most mixers.

I've had Vestax and have a Rane mixer now. They both have a way superior feel to the Gemini. I see your going for battle style so Im assuming you'll be putting the crossfader to use... The Gemini I had had a slow, stiff xfader, Vestax and Rane have amazing feeling faders...

But hey that was like 5 years ago, could be a different story now... And I think it would be hard to find a mixer with all the extras you are looking for apart from this one. Good luck! :t:

My Vestax still gives me a semi whenever I feel the upfaders. Utter lushness.

Eh a rail glide is a rail glide, I cant imagine them being TOO stiff, and I like a little resistance, hate when coughing to hard can send a fader to center

Vestax and rane are way out of my price range, I know what companies make amazing products, but, that doesnt mean I can afford to buy them, even if I want too. & Of course they have a superior feel and build, why do you think they are twice the price?

Aside from a filter, Im not asking for anything that shouldnt be standard :? ... and 5 years ago, this would have been a 400 dollar mixer  ...

You didnt say anything bad about the durability, all you said was the fader is stiff and that you like Vestax more (duh...) My concern is the faders going bad, not there stiffness... And if your gonna offer an alternative, please, keep it in the pricerange, this is a temporary investment after all. What Im building is ... well special.

Thanks for all the help though guys!

Never buy a cheap mixer if you are at all into mixing. It will feel like shit, will break in no time and everything on it with be cheap and nasty.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

yerp. especially cheap gemini (the fisher price of dj equipment)

I would go for a cheap 2 channel quality one for similar price. If you need that extra channel (for cd's i presume) then why dont you just use the channel selector at the top of most DJ gear and switch from Phono to Line?

Only heard good about this - http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/se ... ack=XONE22
Also has the infamous A&H Filter.

This!

Also, if the filter isn't stupidly important, look for the Ecler Nuo 2.0 - probably the best mixer i have used... Better than that piece of turd DJX700 and Vestax's imo.

Ive used the numark DXM06 quite a bit too, which is a really nice budget mixer

Nah I run CDJs on channels 1-2, third channel is for connecting pc to serve as a drum machine. Im not changing my mixing style, thats the biggest point I have here, and too switch back to 3 channels would be a SERIOUS downgrade, I do use all three, at all times. And channel selector doesnt work when you use all 3 at once.

Well, I came up on an all in one  ... so Im sure Ill be okay. And read below about what sold me, dont have to worry about it breaking.

Filter is stupidly important, and Ill never be buying or using Numark again, they stole 300 bucks from me, literally. And the Ecler is almost twice my budget  ... for real... you clearly want me feeding my family noodles.

Thread can end either way though, I bought one last night after noticing it had a one year warranty.

Thanks again guys!

No dont get Gem. It won't last a year. I would pick up something used to save the money. An older Vestax would be good. I can look out locally if you want.

So you come here asking for opinions on a mixer. People gave their opinions, but you already seemed to have your mind made up. You obviously didn't really want advice, just some validation. Well fact is, gemini sucks.

IME experience, gemini's have been awful. it's been a long time since i've seen one around; i get the sense everyone just got burned on owning a gemini battle mixer, etc.

go used midrange and double your value for your $. i got my vestax 175 for around $125 about 5 years ago. not the best, not the worst, sounds completely fine (though not worth replacing the crossfader :( ).

You can pick up one of the gold pmc vestax from a while back for fairly cheap (the ones they say can be dunked underwater and still work), great piece of gear, with the fader eqs, battle style. I think they made a 3-channel. Those are probably some of my favorite mixers. Pre 2003 was when they were built that rugged.
