out of curiosity, what exactly made you want to make your own dj mixer? What components are you using? Who is making your box? You should start a journal of doing it. What extra functions are you going to put into the mixer?
I'd make a custom console before a mixer myself, but thats just me.
Well essentially what Im uilding is a component boxthat can slowly e built up and uilt up into a console... where I stand right now I never use more then 4 channels for my live shit, if I count my PC as one in the true sense of the word 'channel'... ut as Ive designed it, everything will be totally expandable (one motivator for building a custom) ...
Dont worry, Ill e logging the whole process once Im through with the ordering phase (this is gonna take at least four month in itsself, Im well... broke as a joke... haha) ...
My iggest motivators so far have been the amount of quality for price, the fact that if I build my own Ill be able to fully service, upgrade, and maintain it myself, and that really... I think in somewhat odd signal chains and have always wanted to be able to integrate this into my performances, but just cant with traditional mixers.
Technical specs : 4 channels, switchable between 3 inputs on each channel, with any comination of these three ale to pass through the line with a switch (simple to make, modular synth routing boxes, shit comes premade I just ordered 4 of them)... Im gutting the faders from these things Ive een uying at radio shack to control line volumes, there cheap, but they sound good, last a while, and will be really easy to replace when they break. Effects is where things will get interesting, I building a switch+button board that will control which channels are being sent to what effects, whether the signals are eing sent pre or post fader, and then ultimately which side of the crossfader they will be routed to from there... this will lead to 3 rows of buttons and switches under each fader that will make sense to noone ut me, ut hey, itll do what I want!
I eastimate the whole thing, as its being built right now, to cost me juuust under 400 American, service costs, and infinite upgradability to be counted in later. Stick that pricetag in your Allen n Heath and smoke it.
Oh... and your question about the case... my uncle has a CNC press in his basement. From there, just gotta buy acid etch and paint it in...
