a question about massive..

Post by sefs » Fri Oct 22, 2010 5:05 pm

hello everyone,

i might be really, but then really stupid.. but i've been making a lot of pads lately to expand my own library of synths.. and i can't get massive to undo the next thing: i have (as it is standard in every initialized new patch in massive) hooked up envelope 4 to the AMP of the synth.. now when i play the first note.. as it fades out due to a long release on the envelope.. then i want to play the second note.. so what it does is that it sets a long attack time over the new note again.. but the problem is.. the settings of the AMP are then also used for the previous note which has been played.. so before it even completely fades out.. it 'ducks' to a lower or higher volume again.. and that sounds kinda ugly.. all i want is to have the ADSR sequence hooked up to any given parameter to restart again when i play a new note.. without it affecting the previous note played.

does anyone have a clue what i am doing wrong? i've tried almost everything already.. but i can't seem to change this!

basically it does this with every parameter that i have modulated with envelopes.. so let's say i modulate the wavetable position of an oscillator.. when i play the second note.. the modulated sound in the previous note gets reset to the first starting point of the wavetable position in the second note.. all i want is the first tone/note played to just fade out the way it should :(

that of course would be an option, but then thing is i remember i never had this problem with pads in let's say albino 3.. so i kinda wonder if it's just an option that i'm missing in massive?

it sounds as though you've turned the release up higher than the sustain of the envelope, so the previous note jumps in amplitude as you release it and select a subsequent note?

Perhaps not, but maybe.

perhaps glide/portamento mixed with slow attack? turn the glide down and attack down.

By any chance are you also modulating the filter cut off with an ADSR envelope? If the release is shorter then that of the volume envelope's release, it might be the cause for the volume jump/ugly part.

Failing that, might be an idea to get rid of the whole attack phase on your initial patch altogether and automate the first note's attack externally?

or link velocity to amp env. attack, to get even more variation. Edit midi velocity as needed...?

hey guys, thanks for the support so far.. i have uploaded a small example of what i mean..

you can find it here (it's just a few seconds): http://www.epleptic.com/sefs/example.mp3

what i mean is.. i play the first tone.. then i start playing the 2nd tone.. as soon as i press the key for the 2nd tone.. whole volume drops a little like you can hear it doing that exactly at 4 seconds in..

i do have envelopes modulating the filter cut off though.. but i used to make em like this in albino and i never had this problem before to be honest.

it might as well be a sudden change in the filter cutoff though.. like it's being reset while playing the second tone.. but for the first tone i want to fade out the way i've assigned it with the release of the envelope.. while starting the whole envelope from the beginning again for the second tone.

Ahh, yeah.. Can here the filter drop off slightly. Stick the release of the filter's envelope all the way up if you haven't already so it flows with the amp's envelope.
Other then that I'm not too sure. Sounds nice as it is though, man :D

EDIT: also, there's that "Hold" function on the envelope menu... not played about with it too much, but it's also a possible fix?

Use 2 synths, and alternate between them. Problem solved. kinda ^_^

thanks for the advice everyone!

If i were really stuck, thats how I would do it..

Example:
For my basses I have 4 synths, each one is a variating sound from one 'base' patch. I swap notes between these to create a more interesting bass-line

yeah Depone; i kinda figured that out already as well :-) mostly for basses / wobbles.. but apparantly it might be pretty conveniënt for me to start doing this for pads as well :)
