Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Just moved here for Uni, doesn't seem to much happening here club-wise, any other Edinburgh heads on here who's be interested in starting a night?
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
*cue DFRNT coming in and linking you to a shitload of nights*
Seriously, Edinburgh gets more nights than Glasgow and Glasgow's been getting a fair few crackers recently.

Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Alright man welcome to Edinburgh! I felt the same when I started uni 3 years ago, there wasn't much! Off my head you've got Volume! which is on every month, has been getting the biggest bookings in Edinburgh for years! They get a diverse selection from the harder stuff (e.g. Caspa) to deeper/garagey (El-B). Innuendub who do monthly Mondays at cab vol (see me room2 for some 2step at Rusko) generally focus on the harder stuff and pull in a big crowd! Then you got Big'n'Bashy which goes pretty hard with the dubstep but also gets some very sick grime bookings like P Money & Terror Danjah, is a big night always!! Drinks are expensive though!! Jungledub every week at bongo wednesdays. Heard It Through The Bassline (personally, id say the best bookings) Ben UFO, James Blake, Untold, Mount Kimbie, Ramandanman....nuff said. Nu-fire Mondays at Sneaky Pete's has a dubstep special every month. Then theres a new night me & my mate are involved in at GRV called SHAKE every wednesdays focuses more on UK funky, garage and house but might hear a Silkie tune at some point haha...Also DUBSTAR just started at Medina every month!!
ALSO
Check out Glasgow cos the bookings are rediculous -- best nights are Fortified every month (last week was at Elijah & Skillin, Oneman & Ben UFO), NUMBERS - Joker, James Blake & Girl Unit this Friday. Ballers Social Club - Lucky Me night more focused on abstract hip hop (WONKY@@@) Pursuit Grooves, Rustie etc.....ALL VERY SICK - GUB TIL YOU DROP
ALSO there is Elektrikal who raves ntings with a stupidly large soundsystem.
Hope that helps haha! ONE LAST THING - MOST EDINBURGH DUBSTEP NIGHTS END ON DNB OR JUNGLE. I DUNNO IF YOU LIKE THAT BUT JUST BE PREPARED.....

soundman, more into the dubby-techno side of things myself, but love a bit of cloaks/scorn as well. Like a lot of the names you mentioned there though. went to the last volume! party and left, couldn't get into it. sounded like electro-house to me. will keep an eye out. don't have the money to pay for a hostel in glasgow but have noticed that the bookings there are really good. does dfrnt live here? does he do any nights?

Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
If you're thinking of starting your own night give sneaky pete's a try, they seem pretty open-minded compared to some of the other clubs in edinburgh.
He danced for eighteen hours staring straight into the sun, until at length a great vision came... He believed the world was made of shadow and that he could dream himself into the real world that lay beyond...
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
I wouldn't be interested in starting a night on my own tbh, doing a masters, too much work to be runnning a night alone, would be interested in starting something with others though. PM if interested. Also interested in techno [my primary interest tbf] and house too.
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Move to Glasgow.
Jokes. But if techno is your ting then there's Pressure at the Arches http://www.thearches.co.uk/clubs.htm and subclub http://www.subclub.co.uk/index2.html like every freaking night.
Dunno about techno in Edinburgh though? Hanlo?

Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
what is hanlo? and while on the point why is there no techno/decent house here? I came from uni in a place in ireland with a population of 200,000 and since i moved here they've had Luke Slater/Dj Bone/ - and ben sims coming up, ben klock in the new year [don't like any of those names except for klock but you see what i'm saying] house wise the place had levon vincent and prosumer over the same weekend? whats up with edinburgh? all i see is posters for "electro"
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Hanlo is my mate who posted up there ^^^, I'm sure he'll fill you in the techno side too. Only thing I can say is Glasgow gets the bigger and better bookings and that getting the last/first bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh after a club night is the way foward!

Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
I am Hanlo lol check my name ^^. DFRNT does live in Edi, but this doesn't mean that dub-techno is big in Edinburgh cos it isn't. I would love a dub-techno night but I don't know how well it would do in Edinburgh, too much Brokkin for the brozzzz here! Didge would say Glasgow is better cos he bums it hard lol. Edinburgh still gets alot of decent bookings but not on the scale & frequency as Glasgow. Techno in Edinburgghhhhh hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm??? Cab vol??????? Slam play alot haha.............................try Glasgow. Subculture at Sub club Saturdays for house..,...................................

Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
Yea it was deleted cos it was absolute gash and he got alot of hate on dubstep forum for it haha!
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
i was being diplomatic and not going to mention that
Re: Dubstep in Edinburgh?
sound for the info. i just find it really hard to understand how a city this size, with a uni this size, can't have a dubstep/techno night thats not "Brokkin for the brozzzz" [no offence to that sort of thing] the uni doesn't have a dj society, which my old uni had, and really was a focal point for freshers, helped the scene a lot. either way a night is too much work to run on your own, i've got enough work as it is with college. might look into it for the new year.
if i was interested in playing at a night, who would be the right people to fire on a mix to?

Volume aren't doing much in the way of big bookings anymore.
Dubstar is the last Friday of every month.
Also - Coalition is on at Sneakys weekly I think.
The Volume people are pretty much in to a lot of things - it's not always dubstep, quite often it can be more housey/electro-ey.terence wrote:soundman, more into the dubby-techno side of things myself, but love a bit of cloaks/scorn as well. They are - it's a decent venue, but they have quite a bit on - so might be hard not to clash with another night.the lone raver wrote:If you're thinking of starting your own night give sneaky pete's a try, they seem pretty open-minded compared to some of the other clubs in edinburgh.
Yes I live here - not too far from The Peartree, and no - not running a night... yet.terence wrote:Does dfrnt live here? does he do any nights?
Nonsense. Edinburgh has a "scene" - but promotion is awful. There's some fucking brilliant night and people playing, but nobody knows about it because promo is shit. Nobody seems to be able to hand out a few flyers these days. Jim / Om Unit played Bongo the other night and I had to find out from the man himself, a week before it was on. Kid Kameleon and Tinker played Friday AND Saturday night at 2 different venues, and there wasn't a single head in sight - and both sets were amazing.dusty head wrote:glasgow>>>>>>>>edinburgh

Either promo doesn't exist - or people aren't interested in going out, unless it's some wobble somewhere.
The exception is Heard It Through The bassline - must be big promo at Edinburgh uni, since I never see flyers - but the nights are packed to the rafters with mostly posh students.
There's also a new night at Liquid Rooms called Scream - had Benga and a few other so far. If they start booking some good names, I'll go - but it's a Thursday so that doesn't help.
---
One of our big problems in Edinburgh is venues.
Cab Vol is a bit smelly, and hard to fill both rooms.
Bongo is good (Messenger Soundsystem), but has lots on - and drinks can be pricey.
Liquid Rooms is great, but unless you've got like £1,000,000 it's a bitch to set a night up.
Sneaky's is a good venue, but it's tiny, so gets pretty warm.
Faith is a decent venue, but always seems to have terrible nights on. Is it even open anymore?
GRV is good, but hidden away. Changes management like, every other day. never know what's going on there.
Can't think of any others at the moment - but there's more of a bar scene in Edinburgh than a club scene. Which is a crying shame.
