Moving from reason to cubase

I did this earlier this year. The Reason sequencer seems modeled after Cubase more than any other program, so that's the easiest part; a lot of keyboard shortcuts are similar (ctrl-click = alt-click, etc).

By far the hardest thing was (and still is) routing, since you're not doing it visually anymore. When you use virtual wires, it's really easy to route, group, and split channels, but when you just do it in a software-like interface, it can get really confusing. Don't stress out.

Other things to watch out for that I found difficult :

1. Sampling gets a lot more complex, especially in terms of organization, since you probably won't be using one instance of Kontakt or Shortcircuit for each sound but rather managing 16 in one instance and routing them to different channels. This gets easier though.

2. When I used Reason, I NEVER used sends, since I could use any effect as an insert and not worry about the hit to CPU...I still haven't gotten the hang of sends in the sense that it takes me a lot longer to get the sounds / effect that I want as opposed to an insert.

3. Reason's sequencer is better in some ways; moving events and automations is a lot easier (why you can't make automations easy-to-move blocks I have no fucking clue), and being able to right-click on a parameter to automate it instead of selecting it from a menu is 100x quicker.

4. I didn't realize how good the Reason devices were until I moved onto Cubase; I still haven't found a VST that matches the advanced reverb and distortion, and the Subtractor is really easy to use (i.e. get good results) in comparison to a lot of VST synths (Thor as well). Dr Rex also makes working with breaks really easy, and although you'll get way more freedom with something like Kontakt or Shortcircuit, you'll find it takes a lot more steps to do some of the simple things (e.g. being able to edit envelopes as a group and also for individual slices).

5. You can clip Reason's mixer and get a good sound; this will sound horrible in Cubase, so you will learn mixing a lot more and do a lot more subtractive EQing.

6. CRASH (deal with it)


For every one of these, there's probably 10 benefits...but it will probably be a pain in the ass at first. Just try and enjoy it as a learning experience.

Fair play; if you can afford to drop 1000 on a new VST, then I'd recommend going to a pro shop and getting some advice as to the top end stuff, as opposed to asking on forum.

drum machines im not fussed about, can imagine ill still use redrum for its simplicity.

ive heard waves is the shit for mastering, so ill look into that.
been plannin this mass upgrade for awhile and only recently i was inspired to take charge with it haha.

my top tip is this. Stop playing with VSTs and plugins. Learn how to make sounds using the most basic synth ur daw comes with. Learn it inside out so you know what every button does and you can create any sound you can hear (from a synth).

Learn the art of sampling and then use samples to create weird atmos/fx/melody's.

Leave the mastering to the pro's. Make music and make sure u can nod ur head to it, 1, 2, 3, 4! Bang ur head to it hehe

it's not about moving from Reason to Cubase, it's about the 2 working together.

yeah man definetly, and trust me ive done this (not completely but to a happy level)
just think its time for change, and its hard to work round reasons sound engine, but i will definetly be usin rewire :p
