DSF Awards 2011

Post by badger » Wed Nov 17, 2010 4:07 pm

DSF awards are back again this year and as a way to include the sort of music you'd get in this section i thought it'd be good to create a new category in the awards, and it may also be a way to not have the more mainstream and therefore popular side of things sweeping all the awards which happened a bit last year. the more strictly house stuff is tricky to include as these are the dubstepforum awards after all but the wot do u call it/post/future/hybrid dubstep type stuff along the night slugs style of things can still have a place on the awards i think

the problem though is quite what to name it, so i thought you guys might have some input. the other problem is that the category can't be more than 25 characters long including any spaces, 14 of which will be used for the "best ........ producer" part of it

now i know there's the problem of noone wanting to name this music and i'm not asking you to do that, but we need to come up with something that we can put on the voting section without it sounding too pretentious and wanky. currently it's looking like "post-dubstep" might be the best option, even though it is a bit pretentious, because it fits in the character limit, but there's also suggestions of calling it "?" (which will probably confuse a lot of people) or maybe the room 2 thing could come into play again

we could also include a "best ..... DJ" category but i'm not sure that would be as necessary as a lot of those DJs will be playing dubstep as well as a lot of other types of music in their sets but we're open to your opinions on this

since the forum section was named house, the awards co gould on as well, most forum users would be familiar with what it would mean, though there would still be the risk of people associating the categories with more traditional house music styles... or just name it garage, as most garage producers that are still around doing tunes, are represented and mentioned on this forum quite often.guess simple would be the way to go.

post-dubstep is just irrational as dubstep is either not over nor did many of these musicians inspire themselves in dusbtep directly...

my 2 cents...as i'm in total agreement that this is indeed a tricky thing to name, and whatever will come out will always be criticized by random forum users.

Why not two categories:

great idea to recognise these artists, the whole dubstep/bass music scene has been pushed forward a lot this year by julio bashmore, PTN releases, night slugs etc.

persoanlly don't like the sounds of post-dubstep, reminds me too much of what the critics described joy orbison as, to make them sound like they knew the scene from day dot haha.

i think you might just be best going for house, things like garage, 2 step, funky, techno all can come under house. and the people voting will know what your talking about as well, there not going to be confused why you've forgotten deadmau5 and axwell. also i think users of this sub-forum will be more pleased for being included than to backlash.

"House music is a genre that is widely accepted and quite easy to digest," says Instra:mental's Damon Kirkham. "There is a lot of room for experimenting. House music will always be around, but it will keep evolving."

i think House is bad name for category in dubstep awards because:

i think we should have Best ........ DJ as well, because there are great djs on forefront of this sound, who are not producers like Jackmaster, Oneman, Ben UFO...

then again, they can compete in Best Dubstep DJ as well, with Skream and other more popular names... but so can producers like Girl Unit as well...

mutant house is a good term but not really right for these awards imo

i quite like this. avoids any of those terms like future or post etc. the only problem is with some of the stuff that's at 140 but far more in the style of the <135 stuff (if that makes any sense)

i'm happy either way. it gives a chance for the more interesting (in my eyes) DJs to compete without coming up against all the DJs from the harder side of dubstep which is only a good thing really

if you've seen previous awards you'll have seen the amount of whinging that people throw our way. you can guarantee there'll be a lot of people complaining if there's a house award in the dubstepforum awards and we'd rather minimise that by getting the naming right because you can be sure that people will find something else to do with the awards to be in uproar about as well

Why not call it something like Freestyle? Freestyle doesn't really have any connotations of its own within the dubstep/house world, and conveys perfectly what most of these artists seem to be doing. The music that's come out of this scene obviously owes some of its roots to dubstep, but it would be inaccurate to call it anything like garage or funky.

Escaping the rigid dubstep aesthetic, mixing sounds from a variety of sources from jazz to kuduro to UKG to house, vascillating between 2-step and 4-to-the-floor beats, a huge sound palette.

I think Freestyle is short, to the point, and about as accurate as a single-word label could get. I'm not proposing that everyone call it this from now on, but for an awards ceremony I think it's pretty good.

so far then, taking in everyone's input, the best thing to do imo is just wotucallit.

people that know and/or care will know what that means..can't really see that stirring any kind of crybaby controversy that can't easily be ignored.

oh and re: <135 and >135 idea..brackles and plenty others still write tunes at 140 that are more in line with garage than dubstep. this is splitting hairs a bit too much, imo.
hey, you wouldn't hire a clown to fix a leak in the john..so why do you let these hooligans tear down the biz?

I was thinking DSF House Section Best Producer but obviously this doesn't fit within the character limit,
House Section Best Artist or something to that effect would work.

You could even stick the nominations part of it in this sub-forum (but obviously include the voting in with the rest).
That way this section has been represented (after all the awards represent the views of this forum mainly not of the entire world!), but there has been no music put in boxes.
