I started listening to Deadmau5 at about the same time I first heard dubstep (back in 2007). Joel is, imho, one of the best most brilliant composers of electronic music in the world. The diversity he has in his music, from mainstream trancey/progressive house, to the far reaches of minimal and techno is astounding. There aren't any producers like him that have the kind of elasticity in their sound to be capable of putting out so many tracks in so many genres (with the exception of Skream and a few others maybe [debatable]).

That being said, Deadmau5's dubstep productions don't resonate with me in the same way his other music does. I think they are well produced and have potential, and if he dedicated a lot of time to making dubstep he could churn out some really interesting next level tracks. Take this one for example.

It has some interesting percussion and ambiance in the breakdown that I dig a lot. I'd like to hear more frequencies in the subsonic range (the lack of which is probably a side effect of his heavy house influence where bass does not ride beneath the kick), but it has potential. However, I heard the finished song of this live at Chicago a few weeks back, and it was just too long and monotonous.

Raise Your Weapon is quite an interesting concept to me, but again it's too long. I'd cut the length in half honestly. Dubstep doesn't hold up to long repetitive phrases that repeat over and over like in tech-house or trance. It just has a different flow, and making a 9-10 minute dubstep track will not be interesting if you're using the whole "maximal bro-step-esque" sound. Also, after every 32 beats, the instrumental just repeats itself after the drop of this song. I'd like to see more attention to detail, it doesn't feel like Joel spent as much time on this track as he's spent on a lot of his others.

Taste is subjective, everyone on here should already know this instead of bitching about it and calling others 'purists' and some other idiotic bullshit you can come up with. I think what most people are sick of is the exact same song from 2006 being made over and over again with slight variations in the LFO. It's not that we hate on this or that or have a narrow taste in music, in fact quite the opposite. I listen to everything from country to jazz to jungle to pop and beyond. With tracks like these tho, it's really just a shame because we all know deadmau5 is capable of so much more. It seems like they took the same formulaic approach as most mediocore producers new to the sound and it's kind of a let down is all. Dubstep can be anything, it doesn't have to be one type of song, over and over and over again
