Main sub genres ?

Post by tripaddict » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:43 pm

what are the main sub genres in dubstep ?

im trying to broaden the rules for the dubstep producers collective b/c people are complaining their tracks arnt being successfully submitted .... the rules for the group are anything with 'dub' / 'dubstep' in the genre ... the main reason for doing this is to make the mods lives easier .... so they dont have to listen to each track before approving it.

here's our group if your not already a member .... http://soundcloud.com/groups/dubstep-pr ... collective

Don't know if any of them have any official names yet, but there's a few broken down as so:

- Jump up/Brostep (I kinda like the latter name actually :P)
- Atmospheric Dubstep (breakage, kryptic minds.etc.). This is also a lot closer to the original dubstep sounds than I think anything else
- Melodic dubstep
- There's also what I would refer to as glitchstep (lots of glitchy sounds and effects)
- Dubhop (dunno if you'd call it this, but basically a fusion of dubstep and hip hop), reminiscent of guys like Matty G

These aren't official names btw, just names I've seen used for these splinter genres.

I think it's good to identify these (and a good thread!), as I think it's important to know what people like - which is very important for event organisers.etc.

I am not in your group so I don't even know what you are talking about but dubstep is a subgenre. I don't like breaking it down any more than that. You can give each track a sub genre case by case if you want but trying to box tunes together is counter productive imo.

Well, I think every artist has his own style and thats how the scene progresses or ... doesn't

think about what music would today without all those jazz gangsters and led zepplin... etc?
who cares about genres? it's music. if you need to label it, label it as whatever you want

To me it's like saying Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Sex Pistols, Jimi Hendrix, Korn and Cannibal Corpse is just rock and there's no need to differentiate them.

So what's the name again for the likes of Broken Note, Machine Code, Triage, Sinister Souls, Ohmwerk, Redline, etc who make dark & brutal stuff but very distinct from the whole brostep/midrange cack thing ? It was dubcore, right ?

Brostep = Robot sounds usually, but not exclusively. Usually indentifiable when the kick is the most prominent sub in the track.

Gorestep = Blast kick beats, metal rhythms, vocal wobbles, distinctly less half timed then brostep, often with over the top lyrical content, including MC's or Metal Vocalists.

Dubstep = Dark, gutteral sub bass, typically with a reggae or jungle vibe, though not exclusively. Typically highly centered on sub bass and melodies, though often focusing on rhythmic elements as well.

Futurefunk (to cop it from skream) - Four to the floor vibed stuff with a distinct focus on bass and lead synths, paying homage to early electro, trance, house, and the like.

My 2 cents.

To add to that, the term Brostep does actually seem to be getting coined in interviews and stuff now, so I'm thinking that this may actually establish itself as a definitive subgenre.

There has always been subgenres for dubstep.. or at least there has been for time but it's nothing official. I just hate it with DNB where they come up with a new marketing term and pretend it's a completely new thing all together. The most recent example is drumstep... GTFO

Ehh

Brostep
Drumstep
Gorestep
Pornstep

And... stuff you might confuse with a grime instrumental?

Filthstep was much more appropriate than brostep
