So far i'm working with 2 oscillators loaded with triangle waves, I know i'm in the right area in terms of lfo and cutoff but my sound is just so messy, any suggestions please? I use albino.
I just can't get it

processing mateSlofe wrote:This is doing my nut in, in Caspa's tune ooh r ya www.myspace.com/caspadubstep the bassline is a really smooth sounding womp. I can get the womp pretty good and I know it's a low cutoff but I just can't get my sound clean as that. I'm not trying to create the sound exactly the same, but the sound I have in my head is in that ballpark.

Here's what I got so far http://www.4filehosting.com/file/6807/Sofar-wav.html
It sounds pretty rough, no matter what I do I can't seem to get the bottom end sounding smoother it strains my speakers and not in a good way. I'm pretty novie when it comes to EQ and compression I sort of know what i'm doing but then again maybe not, so some settings on how to sort this and some pointers as to where i'm going wrong would be much appreciated cheers.

Caspa's sounds like subtractive synthesis to me. You can clearly hear the filter.
What your sound hasn't got that Caspa's has, is a load of reverb that seems to smooth it out. Also yours has some weird high frequency aliasing on it, like the bit depth has been turned down. Never used Albino but could just be a crap filter.
If you use sine waves then you won't be able to hear the filter at all and you won't get that wowping sound, just changes in volume. Sine is a totally smooth sound as it doesn't have any harmonics.
I think your synthesis is fine as you have the basic sound. Try boosting the bass a bit, cutting a bit around 600hz, compress it, then send it to a fairly large decay reverb bus ( around 1.5 secs, not forgetting to cut out anything below around 200hz on the reverb ).
What do you mean by straining your speakers? Distortion because it's too bassy? Try low cutting at 40Hz to see if that helps.

Yeah that high frequency sound has always been a thorn in my side, I used to use Reason around a year ago and I had the same problem, I could never get rid of it in any of my basslines. Any idea on how to do it or is it just down to albino having cap filters, if so which synth would you recommend for a good filter?Sick Rebel wrote:Also yours has some weird high frequency aliasing on it, like the bit depth has been turned down. on Capsa's myspace page it has an interview in his blog... he says he uses just 'Reason and a PC and always has done'
i cant see this being true tho, especially as most of his answers in that interview he's jus fucking around
he also says hes producing scouse house and gabba.. lol so think hes jus chatting shit...

i quite like some of the logic synth filters ( ESM ) but they just aren't warm enough and just don't sound full enough. i'm sure there are good software filters but i'm not enough of a plug-in whore to really recommend any...
I think that weird hi freq sound is called aliasing, and happens when your bit depth is too low and you're trying to represent a quiet sound. is there a way of increasing the bit depth to 24 bit in Reason? Could just be digital distortion actually. I'm not sure.
Also there is loads of noise in the sample. Shouldn't really be happening with just software I don't think. Don't really know much about Reason but maybe the plugs are just bad quality...
I don't use Reason anymore I use project5 which basically has the ease of Reason but can use vst instrument. I'm sure there's a way to reduce the bit depth, i'll have a look cheers.Sick Rebel wrote: hardware.

I recommended FM because I've had good results with Logic's EFM synth set to mono / "unison", then followed by a filter... FM can get really low and powerful, but then you get the overtones and distortion of the filter. Unfortunately the EFM isn't as fully featured as I'd like - I'd prefer it if the LFO was more precise and there was more routing - but it's free so w/e.
If Caspa is actually using Reason, perhaps he's running his bass through the Scream? That thing was the only part of Reason I liked.
