Human dissections

Post by the wiggle baron » Tue Mar 27, 2007 6:57 pm

Well, I just found out that 23rd of April im going to Bristol for cadaver work as part of my course (chiropractic).

I've found myself really torn over this, i mean, im definately going to go. Lets be honest, it will be quite an experience. But I dont know how im going to deal with it, while im not a particularly spiritual man, and definately not a religious one, I still have a horrible feeling about it. I can't tell whether or not I like the idea. I mean, that was someones son/daughter.

I dunno, i just found out and im a little freaked out about it...

I just think it feels slightly disrespectful, i mean i can understand of course when doctors, and surgeons especially, do this (they will have to learn to deal with death as an every day part of their life) but as a chiropractor i wont have to deal with this. It feels like a bit of a tangent to my course, and I dont know if that matters or...ah goddamit i just dont know!!

Having a bit of an ethical dilemma here...

If I may;

Don't be a wuss. It's just the first couple minutes that'll be strange. As soon as you get in there, you'll be fine.

A friend of mine is finishing his doctorate, and the stories he tells me (!)

He's been amputating stuff in the past few weeks. A big toe, a leg below the knee....etc. And they don't let him sleep more than 3 hours a night (!)

Anyways, best of luck

Exactly. They chose it, there's nothing disrespectful.

IMHO by the time a body is embalmed and preserved, it looks more like a wax model than a person. There's no animation, no healthy glow, no trace of life left. The smell of chemicals is the most off-putting part.

Best wishes.

Only the first few minutes are disturbing from what I've heard.

I know several people who have done the cadavery thing and they always say the same thing. After a while you accept what has happened and the bodies just turn into objects rather than people.

Another fun thing is that guys tend to react worse to it than girls, from what I've heard.

If you were a wiggle Baroness, you'd probably fare a little better.

what boh peep said.

the human body is a machine that houses the soul. (as far as i think)
as a chiropracter, your job is to work on that machine. Think of it like a car, and your the mechanic.

Yeah, I know, ive thought about it from pretty much every angle there is. And i know theres nothing spiritual about a dead body, its just that. A (very well organised) slab of meat to go the extreme.

Still doesnt sit well!

Especially as (imo) its nothing but the chiropractic profession over-reacting to 100 years of criticism. Chiro's have always been viewed in the past as quacks who just crack your back, take your money and run. Its why the chiro course these days is so fucking intense. (I mean, we have more hours of lectures than a degree in medicine, and we do it in 3/4 years...) But it really is just to prove a point, that we really are professionals and not just someone of the street who took a weekend course and can suddenly call themselves a chiropractor (although this still happens in some countries, spain for example has no legislation regarding chiropractic, so anyone can set up a course there with whatever syllabus they desire, and award chiropractic degrees for it. Well, its not quite that simple, but its really not far off the truth)
Anyhoo, to me it just feels like this has been added more for show than anything else (which if i was to donate my body to science i would NOT be happy about. Well, obviously i wouldnt really notice...but whatever) I can't imagine what I will gain from this that could not be picked up in a textbook. If i can ever see inside a patient...ive probably done something very wrong indeed...

i drew from a cadaver for an anatomy drawing class and it was surreal, but damn do you learn a lot about human physiology observing the dissection.

I'll save my cadaver anecdote for after you've done it :D

My advice: Go, (you'll be fine), and try not to be distracted by squeemishness or whatever, just really concentrate on getting as much of this type of knowledge while its on offer (limited time).
