I just broke so much monitoring kit...

Post by Basic A » Thu Nov 25, 2010 9:39 am

I am now out a right channel + my sub :(

Dont ask. Fuck FL and its improperly placed plugins. Dont run mixers hot.

Budget : 300 dollars america preferably, will go up to 500, but Id rather stay low because until I get this, I dont even have anything to listen on.

Need : Monitors with enough sub to fill a mid-sized bedroom or a monitor sub combo thats in the budget.

Am not : Flexible on budget or an idiot, so dont assume either.

Biggup you lot, you always help out in these situations...

Active preferable.

Can do passive but that will involve hunting pawn shops for amps :?

Real tempting, but not gonna jump on the first thing I see either, so holding out for a few more hours... see where this thread goes.

Check ebay for some Alesis monitors. They are cheap.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

I tryed to reach for 'Blood Overdrive' , one of the default fl plugins that I use on subs for a bit of color.

Accidentally hit 'Delay' because its right under blood overdrive in alphabetical order.

1/3 time ping pong delay came on, causing the sub i was making to layer up, triple the DB, bounce around the stereo plane like a superball, and after about 2 seconds the right channel of the meter was high enough to cause my shit to make a sickening pop, and for the sub to smell a biiit like moldy cheese. Open em up, I cant tell whats wrong with the monitor... but if youve ever see a capacitor blow up, it spews out this white bubble gum textured stuff... shits all over the inside of my sub. Neither the monitor or sub produces sound though...

My headphones work fine, so at least it didnt damage my soundcard/pc.

But still, Ive had this rig for years, and Im gutted to see it go, much less like this.

the samson's are good.

also having a limiter on your master channel with no gain but the ceiling at 0/-0.1db is always a good idea if craziness might ensue.

Can you investigate getting them repaired? Can't hurt to try and might be the best choice if your ears are used to this set up.

Quite, to both of those statements. That is pretty fucking terrible. Sorry to hear about that.

Wow basic that sucks man that almost happened to me the other day in a feedback kind of way but i turned everything off really fast. Hope you find something good, 300 bucks can def get you some decent monitors though that will work at least.

Personally since you said you are in a mid-sized room, I would assume its over 12x12. I would get a pair of A5s I know you'll probably say something about the size of the speaker. But if you compliment it with a sub down the road you are looking at the perfect sized system for your sized room.

In that price range (~500) the adams are some of the best quality you'll get and if you are afraid of a small speaker I wouldn't be. I think you really can't beat the quality of those speakers, and have I used the dynaudios 5As/Adam A5s in multiple control rooms, most specifically at Fantasy Studios where such acts as miles davis, dave brubeck and most pop stars record there and all the control rooms there were fitted with these as nearfields. The engineer I was training under at the time did a pink noise sweep so I could hear where they cut off. I was impressed with both speakers, mind you this was in a perfect listening condition.

After typing all this I re-read that your budget isnt flexible so you are looking at:

Fostex PM-1 or PM-2

On a side note, it may behoove you to grab an old solid state amp and some old 3-way speakers temporarily and use them as mid-fields (can be had for cheap at any used electronics store/pawn shop). After producing on many different speakers I spent some time away from my own monitors as I was out of my own area. I found that producing on a system like this is great if you understand how the speakers will translate. You can get a great sound from an old amp and some old speakers at an extremely cheap price. It might be beneficial to do this now and save some money, so when you do get some better monitors you can a/b them on a different system right at your desk.

Hope you get this sorted, no sound sucks.

@ Collective, thanks man, Ill bear all this in mind, but stepping down from having a 10" sub and two 8 inch mid's too 5 inch wanna-be tweeters does not sound appealing no matter how I look at this =/ ... I want to be able to enjoy listening to my music on here as well, I could care less about curve and accuracy and whatnot, my old rig was a piece of shit, but it shook hard enough =/... Not really a 'Buy quality and wait till Im down the road and compliment it with a sub' kinda guy... more buy cheap impulsive stuff that makes alot of low end... Do you really think theyd have any kind of balls to play 'Mud' or the like on, at comparable loudness to what I was using? Will bear them in mind though!

Jean luc - Yeah, I probably could, but you have to understand what I was running werent monitors per-se, but rather a collection of random cones Ive built up over the years that just worked how I needed them too... The sub was only 30$'s at a flea market, so I realllly dont see that being financially smart, getting it fixed. I know people are gonna read that and say that any monitors I buy will sound better then that, but, like I said, its not flatness of signal and shit I get off on, its my bass >.< lol...

Danoldboy - Appreciate the links man, alot, very helpful stuff, dont want to buy off ebay though, Ive tried that twice : once I got a broken mixer, and once I got a broken dremel. If I can find a nice set of used anything local though, thats probably what Ill opt for.

i think a pawn shop amp and some 3-ways would play 'mud' however loud you want it.
