I don't understand why people who know shitloads of music theory have to get like this when people who don't know it all tell others that it might not be for them. Nobody is saying that learning theory won't help you write tunes. The point is that many great musicians don't know the first thing about theory but they still write amazing tunes. You can learn it from a book or you can learn it from the keys, it's the same result either way and if reading technical stuff about augmented diminshed 7ths all day isn't your thing then you shouldn't be persecuted for it. It gets my back up when people assume they are better than you in some way just because they've read loads of books on music. It isn't for everyone. You make good tunes man and I like you but your attitude when it comes to theory really sucks. It's like you assume people are lazy and stoned because they don't wanna learn theory? I don't smoke and work on music for hours every day. It just doesn't give me a boner to be sitting there reading theory all day instead of actually *making* music. When I read I want it to be a novel.kaiori breathe wrote:WHATEVER YOU DO JAYDOT DON'T LEARN THEORY!!!! Swindle is a bloody good example of how good someone can get just by messing around on the keyboard every day, so many brilliant producers have no musical training too. More than you would expect I reckon.

Re: Melodies!
do you have a midi keyboard?
Re: Melodies!
Just because some people don't formally know any music theory doesn't mean that they don't know what works and what doesn't, musically, which is what music theory is. They had to learn the same things, but through trial and error instead of fancy book learnin'.paravrais wrote:I don't understand why people who know shitloads of music theory have to get like this when people who don't know it all tell others that it might not be for them. Re: Melodies!
I smoke copious amounts of Ganja, on the real, but besides that I think I do alright for someone who just goes off me ears. I know some theory but all that does is help me name things I already think sound good, like harmonic minor, I learned that on a guitar before I could play one, but I learned what it was called like 2 years later. I think theory is good to know, but you only NEEDDDDDD it if you can't distinguish the difference between harmony and dissonance. other than that you might be mediocre but you don't HAVE to know theory, it would just make up for, or accompany, whatever natural ability you already possess. That said, I think you should pick it up somewhere along the way because it helps you, not even always your music because it doesn't change your technical ability or what you are good at, it just makes you a better musician.

arpeggiators are mega lame. write your own bits. then you will learn about harmony instead of just replicating plebby presets

Read "Raven Spiral guide" (as been suggested before), it's really easy to follow and you'll learn a lot from it!

Music composition for idiots is pretty good as well. $20 well spent.
