On the right path?

Hey there. I'm new to this site and new to the genre. My name is Chris and I'm a 19 year old college student currently in America. Before you start throwing your mean words at me for being bandwagon or liking some Mt Eden, I want you to know that I'm not one. I've done my homework and know that dubstep has been around way longer then most new people assume and the original stuff like Kode 9, Mala, and Joker are much different from the sounds of Mt Eden, Skrillex, and Roksonix. To be honest, I enjoy both types of sounds.

Being so new, I'm trying my best to understand the history of dubstep and broaden my horizon on artists, good or bad. If you could assist me in doing so, it would be much appreciated. Thanks

EDIT: Oh, I also want to ask about vinyl records? Is the sound better?

to me, vinyls are all about collecting. i am a bit of a nostalgic too and that's why i get my shit on wax one could say that i'm paying 7-10+euros more just for a plastic disc and a cool looking piece of cardboard but there's a difference in blasting out a 320 from your iphone or sparking up the technics and spinning a record. i prefer the latter one.

i find the sound much better, and just the general dj'ing experience is much more fun using records!
If you want to understand the history of dubstep you need to get right back into garage aswell mate, El-B, Horsepower Productions, Zed Bias, Steve Gurley, Menta, Beatfreaks or any of that kinda vibe!
Bigup for trying to get involved in the music properly aswell.

Thanks for all the info I've been saving up my money for a new subwoofer. Now I think I'll take that money and invest it towards a vinyl record player. I also have a thing for collecting things. Seems like the right move for me.

I'm no dj, but I do care about the quality of my music greatly. I'll definitely look up garage music and those names you mentioned.

I feel like such a noob, lol. Ever since a friend showed me a Mt Eden song, i've been on an adventure to find information on the genre and new artists/songs, and what a fun one it's been!

Mt Eden was my first encounter with the genre, and now that I've learned a good deal about it, the people I'm really starting to like are Kode9, James Blake, and Mensah. All these wonderful sounds are what I needed to get my life going again

My best advice is to just stay away from the 'dubstep' Facebook page. It's false advertising in every sense.

I've spent hours on vinyl sites just listening to different artists etc, nothing better than stumbling across something great that you never had an id for.. and seeing its still in stock

For me personally, aside from the artists in that mix, here are some more "horizon broadening" names making the dark tunes I love (incomplete obviously):

• Icicle
• Shackleton & Appleblim
• Kryptic Minds
• Tunnidge
• SP:MC
• Kromestar
• Lurka
• Zomby
• The Widdler (USA so you probably know him already)
• Jack Sparrow
• Peverelist
• Truth

A good way to go is find a label that has an artist you like then check the releases. For example Chestplate has a distinct sound for all it's releases, if you like one, good chance you'll like the others.
Some more labels: Hyperdub, DMZ, Deep Medi Musik, there's way to many to list here.


I come from a country with it's roots in both the UK and US (Australia) so I've been in almost the same position as you. It's interesting to see my friends move from a shallow appreciation of the usual brostep to the deeper side. The Mt Edens and the Ruskos really are bringing some new people into older dubstep later on.
For me it was 16bit that got me interested in tracks that are opposite of brostep, they have a big variety in the tracks they push out - I couldn't believe this and this was the same guys at first.

True, but what I'm saying is from what i've seen they just need to get it out of their system, then they may develop a taste for the stuff you and I like.

It's open to interpretation what is and what isn't so I wouldn't go as far as to call it a separate genre.
