Hi there! Have had a huge huge interest in production for over a year now and have loved looking at the WIP thread here seeing songs evolve and watching how the dubstep community are willing to help each other out. My production has got to the stage now where I am happy with the sound I am making and the theming of my songs.. I tend to go for the heavier, "dirtier" type tunes but also love creating soundscapes, chopping vocals etc. I am getting my first set of monitors next week and will be adjusting my eqing/synths/mixing/mastering so I can share my tunes with you fellows and they actually sound good rather than the shoddy rubbish I'm sure my current set up is allowing me to translate to other listeners. Thought I'd get a headstart on giving some feedback before I post my songs up here!!

mindcontrol - I like the bass. Sub with character - very very very nice. I think it sits very well in the mix too. The chord progression I like too however there's one instance at 19 seconds and even intervals where the atmosphere of the chords cut out and you're left with a distant, dryish sound.. If it's purposeful, I can see what you're going for but I don't think it quite works so maybe fiddle with that a bit. Beat I really like, sits great in the context of the song although may be a little upfront in the mix. . . Perhaps a little reverb and some more panning. Where is the song going next? Perhaps a few elements dropping out with a more midrangey/soundscaped bass sitting on the sub when elements drop back? Look forward to seeing what you have in store, love what you have going so far!

Bassmagnet - I like the intro. The hat has good variation and I like how it moves in the stereo field, there are one or two instances where it jumps a fair amount but I don't think that detracts. The atmospheric voice is great, the kick sits very well.. Maybe a tiny bit more volume on the kick? White noise build is very nice and blends very well into the 'drop'. I don't know if it's just these speakers but the white noise is a little harsh on the ears at around 52 seconds.. Maybe up the verb wetness a tiny bit there.

Soosh - What can I say man, love it!! The sounds are impossible to keep track of but it just works with the swell taking the listeners attention off how chaotic the rest of the song is, making it subdued yet sublime. At 2.44 when most of the percussion drops away, the piano which is playing all the way through the song carries on.. I think it could do with being taking out at this point perhaps being replaced with another sound.. That way when it drops back in at 3.19, it will have more impact and resolve.

Cubicle - This song has masses of potential.. The intro I really like. The hat that is panned right and hits twice at 1 second I think is a little raw, that's probably mainly personal preference though. I always high pass my hats that sound thick like that so that they are lighter. Again, perhaps personal preference. The sample I like and I like the slap back delay and the fact the voice sounds slightly different on the delayed version. Getting to the drop, the increased kick volume is disconcerting. It does give it more impact though so maybe have it a little more subtle. Love how the drop comes in though!! Really like that. The bass sound itself is a little 'woody' if you know what I mean. It is too high in the mix also imo. Overall, a few changes and I think this could be a BIG tune!!

sectionattack - I'm digging the intro and how the kick hits. I like the progression and the vocal sample used. Building up to the drop is nice. The drop doesn't seem to hit with much impact even though that synth is dirt. I get that it may not be the point of the track as it works without it but adding a sub I think will fill out the sound a lot more and make it more 'full' on the drop.

phenlight - Umm, I'm undecided about the hats (which may not be a bad thing). If the vocal wasn't there, I wouldn't like the hats but I think they fit with the off-beat nature of the vocals. They could do with some more EQing I think.. Take out the 'tight', 'harsh' frequencies and maybe high pass a little. Also, the vocals are too low in the mix. Loving the bass! haha. I love that this song doesn't take itself seriously, it has made me just want to smile and bob left and right! I think you are onto something here. It has a very authentic, rootsy vibe. Definitely keep at this one!!

@FluidMoShun - Cheers for the feedback dude. Just had a listen to yours, sounds amazing. You've got a lot of movement in it + percussion fills and whatnot, which is great. Can't really pick anything out specifically that needs to be worked on... personally, I think some of the sounds around the beginning don't sound 'organic' enough, but that probably comes down to personal preference and I can tell you've developed this feel throughout the song. Oh, and 3:20 onwards, freaking lovely, best part of the track. The guitar slicing is really creative and original.

@weedcali - Nice build-up with the intro, not my kind beat though. Sounds too much like a hip-hop beat with only the kicks and claps buuuut the bass at 2:20 is noicee and filthy. The vocals are a nice touch as well.

@filthy_ - considering you've only been producing for 3 weeks, it sounds pretty good imo. The kick and snare sound really muffled, I reckon some extra could make it close to perfect. The drop needs to be bigger... maybe you could add one of 'woosh' effects before the drop? Or maybe a subbass beneath the other bass? :m:

@2nd chance: thanks for the feedback! i took your advice ;) updated the file, you can tanke a listen. i'm verry open for criticism!
i like your track, however you are right, you propably should break up the monotony a bit, something i always have some trouble with... as for mixing, i cant really tell you what i would do, still not that experienced

@filthy_: your track seems to be very bassy (for my taste a little to much, especially the drums. the format-sound at the end however is great :)

@karma_blitz: i think it's great. dont really know what to critizise!

@ phenlight, the Drums sound intresting. vocal needs bring out more, and sounds to lofi to me aswell.

@ FluidMoShun, sounding nice man. really like the guitar, maybe end it with a tape stop efx.

@ weedcali, them string sound very nice, thing i might have to get Edirol Orchestral now. I like the drop, really works with the vibe of the track.

@ filthy, thats not as bad as some of my first tracks, Stick at it. My only advice is to not worry about your mixs for now, focus on your writing and structure for now.

@Skaven love this mate, really dancy, got my head moving, only thing i could maybe recommend is slightly more sub or maybe make your bass a little rougher and heavier, but thats just what i'm in too :)

@skydroid all this track needs imo is a little more sub, possibly a more enhanced snare, make it more obvious, the violin part almost bought a tear to my eye x) so it's a great tune!

@carmen_ this is a BIG track, i'm a sucker for bitcrusher (i'm assuming that's what you've used to make your "yoi" sound) can't really recommend anything with this one mate x

This is my current WIP, i've got for a sort of off-beat thing, i'm not sure whether i like it, be brutal, if you like it say so, if you don't tell me what i have to do to change it! :)

@Mexicankangaroo: WOW! way to set up an atmosphere... And I'm really enjoying the drums. However they sound set way back in the mix or maybe just more quiet than i'd prefer. But really nice in general. Strong work! (oh, but i'm not a fan of the yuh yuh bass. It's subtle here tho. Dunno, just my two cents)

@3za: This one is out there.... But I have to say its grown on me. I had to give it a couple listens... Sort of Aphex-ish. Nice tho. Keep going.

@ScourgeDubstep: It's missing something. Can't say what. What is here is nice though... I'd say keep going on it. Again, not big on the yuh yuh sound/bitcrushed wob bit...

Made a bunch of changes/added sub bass, etc...

@ScourgeDubstep - i think the kick drum sounds a bit weak; i like the direction with all the cool sound fx but i think the mix lacks a bit [maybe the synths are a bit loud]. looking forward to the whole thing :D
@3za - have to agree with grime syndicate, it does sound pretty aphex-y. digging the use of the filters, but the whole time i kept expecting a drop, or the song to progress into something else. wasn't disappointed though, love the glitchiness towards the end! was this all made with logic?

this is a song i began today; so far it's a concept. open to harsh criticism :]

Hey everyone, I thought it was time I'd stop lurking around these forums and start posting. I've been listening for more than 2 years now and it's only been recently since I've been attempting to produce on Logic and Renoise.
Being my first criticisms/feedback on people, I'm not going to be too precise otherwise I'd look like a fool aha!

@ogunslinger: Haha loving that tune, the wobble's sick and I'm liking the mild synth underneath it. The beat's hell nice too.

@phenlight: The bass is super nice, enjoying the general relaxing vibe of the tune.

@Voodeedoo: Hahah man, not really my type but this is alright! The mellow feel of the tune is really nice, the song is constructed really well too. The kit sounds great and I'm liking the bell-sounding mellow synth throughout the song too.

Anyways, this is my first ever production I've been working on. I've been messing around and experimenting on Renoise for a little while, but I moved to Logic 3 days ago and actually began to try and make something. I am definitely not entirely happy with my tune aha, so any criticism that would help me improve this song would be great.
I'm battling with the kit and variety on this song, but I think I'm fairly happy with my synths. I am yet to put in a sub bass too.
Cheers.

@ Eddy maw- that bass overpowers everything, not really feeling it. The drums don't sound too bad- what I can hear of them- but the hats don't give it any rhythm. Think about the levels a bit more maybe.

@ Weedcali- if I was hearing a big fat sub instead of that wobble I'd say this was pretty cool. The ideas as they are just clash a bit.

@ Voodeedoo- nice enough sounds but needs some more musical/structural content. I like the main guitar/plucky bit. You could go in a zero 7 sort of direction.

@ Grime Syndicate- it doesn't sound very cohesive, the ideas are there but the sounds are a bit thin. Not sure about that sub.

@ Scourge- I liked the vibe at the beginning, the mental bitcrushers not so much. The bleep synths are actually really cool and this could be a decent track, but the drums need to be punching and the synths need a lot of work. Lol at the ending plonked on there, another nice bit.

@ 3za- Some really cool stuff but it's quite masked by that c playing over and over. It's a bit hard to be objective about that middle section but I really like the ending. I don't know what Reaktor does but now I'm interested if this is all done in there.

@ Indoctrination- sorry but this just doesn't do much for me. Hackey kick/snare, film sample, kick roll, wobble etc. Hard to comment on the production, it will just sound like someone else's song in the end if you tweak everything. Sorry.

@ Karma blitz- Er, is this a remix? It sounds like Katy Perry or something wobbled up. The pop elements of the track sound really good though and sound a lot fuller than the robot section.

@ MexicanKangaroo- dig this. Drums/bass could come through harder maybe. I hate that bitcrusher sound but that's purely a taste thing. The wibbley bit could maybe gel into the rest of the track a bit better but not much to say aside from that.

Soundcloud
The arrangement on this is retarded, I'm happy with the sounds but it only really kicks in at 3 minutes something. Is Soundcloud premium worth getting by the way? I have some tracks I want to update on there but only for play-count really, which is kind of negligible at the moment.

3za: I'm enjoying this intro, for some reason it makes me think post rock, until the weird percs come in, which are alot of fun, I agree with whoever said it was aphex-ish, it really does have that vibe, really abstract, wonky synth, I'm not sure what to think of it as a track, definitely interested in where it's going though!

Indoctrination: I feel like this could use a different wobble with some heavier bass and some more realistic sounding drums, I'd also bring the movie samples down and put reverb on them so they sit better in the rest of the mix, and they could also be chopped differently. The intro synth could also use some work.

Grime Syndicate: I really love this intro synth alot, everything sounds good to me mix-wise right now. There's not really a whole lot to comment on but I do really enjoy what you have here so far. Good stuff.

Here's mine: Soundcloud

I've been working on it on and off for a few weeks and actually posted it here, It's tough composition wise I guess because I'm not getting very far with it when I do work, But I like what I've got right now, honest feedback appreciated.

GRIM SYNDICATE

Definitely going somewhere with that track. I don't think it misses any kind of structure in my opinion. Your drums a well fine but your midrange basses could use a bit of tweaking to make them a tiny bit more punchy and present in the mix.

KARMA BLITZ

Hey mate ! Nice remix you got there. Your midrange bass definitely miss a bit of punch, probably too much reverb on this one. Usually what's done with those wobble sound is that they are stereo split while keeping stereo correlation. No need for reverb, like rusko would've said "to sink it in a sea of reverberation".

Hahaha no need for harsh critics only objectiveness is useful. Yeaaah like the feel of it but it would be good to vary the drum breaks a bit. Maybe you don't want to define too much your different phrases to create a sort of flow but it just makes it more interesting (not that it's not). Starting somewhere around 1:22 you have something pan to the right, I might have a sensible right ear but it tickles me a bit whenever I hear you sound pan far right. Maybe vary that a bit. But everything sounds proper good mixing wise, kick right in it, crunchy drum kit nice atmosphere.

MY TUNE : So that's really a big work in progress right now. I wasn't really sure about the old school sample I've put in there but anyways I think that may differ depending on your individual taste. So any comment, advise about anything really would be golden. There's a weird problem with the echo I have at the beginning it kinda stops and playback a measure later (strange).

Cheers !

FluidMoShun wrote:filthy_: Not bad for 3 weeks. The intro's really dissonant and dark, but doesn't really go anywhere when the bass drops. Add some kind of progression and take the song somewhere when the bass drops, and work on varying up the wobble sounds. But not too shabby for just 3 weeks.
i was trying to think of ways to vary it/build it into a drop with a riser or something like that but i havnt figured out how to do that (as well as plenty other things) just yet. thanks for the advice and kind words, it is much appreciated. especially in a learning standpoint. :)

phenlight wrote: @filthy_ good start for only 3weeks producing . Lots of reading tutorials and patience :)
thats what ive been doing. honestly, the first week, maybe even week and a half, ive been doing nothing but trying to make different sounds and piece together drum kits, etc. i have a background in music composition but this is totally different.

MexicanKangaroo wrote:@filthy_ - considering you've only been producing for 3 weeks, it sounds pretty good imo. i know, i was trying to get the drums to sound like they werent underwater but i was experimenting with split frequencies and a long chain of effects. unfortunately, i wasnt quite sure which one(s) were causing the muffling sound.

i also just figured out how to do some sub-bass (thanks youtube!). i incorporated it into my new (experiment) track.
Indoctrination wrote:@filthy_: your track seems to be very bassy (for my taste a little to much, especially the drums. the format-sound at the end however is great :)
thanks! i was trying something new with the drums (im not completely happy with it yet) this time around. i let this project rest for a bit and once i learn a few new things that i can apply to this track, ill go back and make it better. eventually, ill finish one haha.
3za wrote:@ filthy, thats not as bad as some of my first tracks, Stick at it. My only advice is to not worry about your mixs for now, focus on your writing and structure for now.
i know what youre sayin. ive been starting something new each day trying a different thing here and there to each element of the track. some days ill try to use a sound i created in massive, other times ill try a bunch of effects, etc.

thanks everyone for the kind words. ive been studying the production bible, searching for examples for just about anything, and thoroughly going through the "want to make dubstep" thread. its been helping and im pretty happy with where im at for only a short period of time.

anyone, ive listened to a few tracks on this page as well as started another track my self.

weedcali: its so calm and relaxing :n: even when the basses are playing. i cant wait to hear it once its completed :D:

MexicanKangaroo (current WIP/the passing): i love it! the sneaky format basses as well as the other effects were a brilliant touch and just the way everything is layered together is incredible. :e: my only gripe is the snare drum; it sounds a little too electric to me but it does flow and go with the the rest of the elements in the track.

Karma_blitz: :n: at 1:27 it was like the first time i heard a ferrari. honestly, i couldnt say anything negative if i tried. and dare i say it (dont take offense because im a big fan of both) but it does remind me of Sierra Leone and Raise your weapon.
i dont mean to swing from your nuts, but, is there a way youd let me download it? :D

in this one, i did some sub-bass and resampled a few times.
Soundcloud

im quite happy with this one. i plan on finish this, especially after i learn a bit more (especially once i start to try some mixing&mastering).
Soundcloud
i need suggestions for this.
