Stick it into safe mode and create a new user account (may work)
Re: i feel numb
That or a Linux live cd or something. If you can see your stuff you're fine.Neff wrote:well hapefully it isnt lost completely hence the "un accessable" part becuase i managed to get it into safe mode and saw that its all there but i cant attach an external hard drive to it in safe mode as it just freezes the whole pc so i was considering taking out the hard drive putting it in another computer and then backing it up from there and then just formatting the hard drive and re installing windows
@Deadly: RAID is a not a replacement for backups, that thinkin' will get you fucked eventually

Re: i feel numb
That is definitely NOT a backup solution!!! External drives fail far more often than interals - especially USB ones. Get yourself a backup service like dropbox (gives you 2gb), and start from there.Neff wrote:where is captain hindsight when i need himwub wrote:Sorry to hear that manNeff wrote:computer has just kicked it i reckon, not sure how to fix it all my files, WIP's, patches, samples evrythaaang is un accessable
anyway the worst part is not the idea of losing all those projexts its more the fact i cant open up my daaww and make anything just feel really annoyed not being able to start beats and mess about in massive for shits and gigs
anyone else get like this?
You have just learnt the most important rule of computer music production - Backup, backup, backup.as soon as i get everything sorted again ima buy a massive external harddrive so this never happens again, really bad times man

RAID is a lot more efficient than having externals
and no it won't get you fucked unless you're doing something stupid with your comp in the first place
a RAID10 on SSD drives would be ideal

Re: i feel numb (REMINDER TO BACKUP YOUR TUNES)
a solid backup plan will always have multiple contingencies
a RAID array is the best local on computer, next would be a separate on site locally networked off the internet strictly backup raid array storage machine (cheap as hell to build and maintain), next on off site solution, then you can go to your removable media solutions like external hd, flash drives, dvd-r/blue ray which should be stored in a fire/water/electromagnetic resistant case/safe

Re: i feel numb (REMINDER TO BACKUP YOUR TUNES)
I feel your pain bro, same thing happened to me; my power supply and mobo got fried, ditched the PC and bought an old Mac. I still have the HD and don't even know if it works as it was a SATA drive and my old Mac is only ATA compatible. At least the other ATA drive from the PC still works so I'm sure the SATA will to once I find an adapter or something.
The way I see it, it was kind of refreshing to get a fresh start. I had backed up most of my stuff on DVD but havent even reinstalled it yet, it's good to know it's there but I felt it was time to start again after having some experience and wanting to make my work flow more efficient by setting up the folders better instead of organizing a huge mess.

Re: i feel numb (REMINDER TO BACKUP YOUR TUNES)
you should be able to recover your files with an ubuntu disk.
download one from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download (using another computer obviously)
burn it to a disk with poweriso/daemon tools or whatever, on a low speed
put the disk in your knackered computer, turn it on/ restart it
if it doesn't say something like "press F8 for boot options" when your computer first starts up, you'll have to set the disk drive as the first boot device in your BIOS.
(when you first turn the pc on it should say somewhere something like "Press DEL for SETUP", this is how to access your bios)
that's it! the disk should just boot ubuntu, and you'll be able to transfer all your lost stuff to a hard drive.
let me know if it works!

Re: i feel numb
I think the point is to not keep your stuff exclusively on any one drive. Have a duplicate of EVERYTHING (project files, samples, recordings, vst plugin installs, etc) on 2 drives or more. The likelihood of all the drives dying simultaneously is very small .amphibian wrote:That is definitely NOT a backup solution!!! I am sorry for your loss dude, but this thread made me start the long haul of backing my production computer up, so thank you.
20% in after 5 hours o_O but defintiely worth it.

exactly man and not only for the production side of my pc, i use it for everything which obviously means all my music, pictures, documents are all messy as fuck so yeah having the opportunity to be able to do it all againninjadog wrote:I feel your pain bro, same thing happened to me; my power supply and mobo got fried, ditched the PC and bought an old Mac. same thing happened to me last year man, it's devastating best thing to do is just try to see it as a fresh start. Take a break if you need it. I know I did.Neff wrote:computer has just kicked it i reckon, not sure how to fix it all my files, WIP's, patches, samples evrythaaang is un accessable
