when i saw requiem in the theater, i just came back from spending a week in san diego and during that period we partied fairly intensely, which included eating ecstasy on more than one occasion. when i got back into town, we went to go see requiem for a dream. i cried myself to sleep that night, i will never forget it. recovering from pills and watching requiem for a dream = possible suicide.

they call it the kubrick effect, because stanley was the king of it. think about how many times you've watched the same kubrick film, over and over? its impossible to stop watching a kubrick, and thats exactly because he's playing with your expectations as a viewer from the minute the movie starts. he takes you on a ride, and puts you into a guessing game. eyes wide shut is a perfect example of this. so is full metal jacket. the best directors play with your sense of morality and empathy, and get you to empathize with the main characters, that way they can drive the impact of the story in the hardest way. i remember reading in an interview about george lucas, that when he was coming up with the concept of star wars, in his mind he was using greek tragedy as the subtext instead of space and the future. the son killing the father, the dark side/light side. these classic storytelling devices go back hundreds of years.

Maybe i was reading the film too literally and looking for plot holes. The whole film seemed murky and inconsistent, then again, the whole film hinges on this fact given that the viewers perspective is that of a someone possibly of unsane mind, quite similar to Cronenberg's Spider actually.

In regards the ending of The Wrestler, I wasn't disappointed at the ending, more shocked really that such a film can have such a nihilistic ending, even coming after Requiem. It's like the meaning of the film is don't build relationships, don't look after yourself, fuck anyone that cares for you, just do those things you want to do that will end up killing you because that's all you got to feel alive.

Does capture the ultimate tragedy of 'professional' wrestling perfectly though

The Fountain is my favourite film of all time
in that respect isn't it the perfect ending??

i get really tired of watching films and literally knowing how the ending will make me feel, everytime that happens i feel cheated, whereas fromthe sounds of it with this film you get a completely isolated ending, where the character totally dictates how you feel after the movie - as opposed to simply meeting the desire of the audience for redemption or closure??

i duno, i've only seen the last 10minutes so i'll watch tonight and find out.
I wasn't upset at the ending, it was a good ending, I'm just shocked the producers let him get away with it, not many directors get the chance to do this these days, so I guess I'm agreeing with you.

The Mist was another film where the ending was totally shocking, I couldn't believe the studios let them do that one
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

okay... well, i give it a C+...

only because (hear me out):

1. Some of the cinematics are awesome, others seems like someone with a camcorder chasing after the actors... made me nauseous at times, too bumpy..
2. Natalie portman's acting and character irritated the hell out of me, and pretty much ruined it for me... a stark contrast considering she's one of my favorites
3. all the gimmicky psycho-drama stuff was blah and predictable
4. i cannot stand ballet... so between the neurotic OCD main character and all the pretentious dancing, i was on edge the whole time
5. everyone focuses on the whole lesbian business and barely discusses the movie as a film

blah, may watch it again sometime, but i doubt it... really just a bunch of predictable, irritating silliness, imo

i think the film is a lot smarter than you give it credit for but if you dont like something, someone telling you 'yeah but its really clever...!' isn't gona do much to persuade you otherwise!

This movie has ruined my life

It made me fall deeply in love with Natalie Portman :U:

Then I find out that she got knocked up by the dancer guy in the movie and is now gonna marry him

Knell,

The camera work in combination with the entire cast of unlikeable characters was supposed to make you uneasy. Not only was it all intentional but critical in giving the movie it's feel.

A horror film is always going to try to scare the audience however some people don't like being scared. I feel like this movie's goal was to put us on edge but maybe you don't like that?

cool, but the whole bumpy camera thing just made me feel like i was watching a documentary done by a high-schooler who has to chase down ballerinas

it's a good movie, to be sure, and i appreciate what they did... it just got a mediocre review from me mostly because i found the psycho-drama elements cheesy and predictable, and because i cant stand ballet ... oh and because most people just talk about the sex scene (but that didnt effect my review)

(and before anyone thinks im not familiar with ballet, my grandmother was a ballet teacher, my sister was a ballerina, i've seen probably over a hundred shows, and i've been in the nutcracker... so my aversion is personal not just aesthetic haha)

What's wrong with ballet? I haven't seen the film yet, but part of the attraction, for me, is the ballet. It's a pretty fresh setting and ballet is great to watch at times.

dunno, i was raised in a ballet family and it always seemed pretentious to me, and an ineffective means of telling a story... even at its most beautiful moments, since it's limited to such few movements (compared to free form dance)... maybe i just got burnt out on it

i see it as an art form, for sure, but to me its just really irritating.

Plot Spoilers in this clip. Do not watch if you havent seen the movie yet. Before and after green screening and special effects rendering. The mirror shots are sick!
