the meaning of a freestyle has changed, it's only nostalgic backpackers in their braintax t shirts who won't listen to any post '99 American hip hop who try to cling to its earlier meaning.

The meaning of a freestyle has not changed. There are just a lot more shit rappers who can't freestyle trying to pretend they can.

That's like having some shit producer saying the meaning of Dubstep has changed. A music style doesn't just change to accomodate the shittest.

no but the meaning of a word changes depending on the way it is most commonly used.

the accepted meaning of freestyle amongst people who still listen to hip hop in 2010 (not just old cds) is pre written verses with no hook over a beat which the rapper has usually not chosen themselves.

next you'll be trying to argue that gay still means happy to most people.

No I'm saying that the shittest performers in a genre hold no power in defining it. A freestyle is still a freestyle, just because shitty rappers can't freestyle so they start pre-writing bars because they know they're gonna be asked to freestyle that doesn't change the meaning of freestyle.

Lil Wayne is new hip-hop through and through, but when he was asked to freestyle, he tried to freestyle - even though he's awful at it.

Freestyle still means exactly the same thing even if shit rappers have to pre-write their bars.

I'm not denying that it can mean rhyming of the top of your head, but that's simply not what it means to most UK rappers and listeners in 2010. So that's why I put freestyle in the title, and that's why all the videos are labelled as freestyles.

nah thats just cause every mc that would come on westwood for a freestyle had obviously pre written verses (minus some)

but not gna lie in 8 mile you see him writing bars on the bus and hes sposed to be a freestyle rapper

freestyle SHOULD be bars off the top of your head though, some people may not think like that anymore, but thas the same as how some people just see dubstep as a filthy bassline

I have to agree with Badman, that is what freestyle tends to mean now. But...you're a damn fool to shoot someone down when they do have the balls to truly freestyle for 10 minutes straight. It isn't just babble either, lays down better bars than I could write.

freestyle can just mean dropping a couple of verses from different tunes, with no hook, over various beats.

that is the meaning it has in the context of the new wave of uk rap. and that was what I was referring to in this thread.

@ wubstep, I'm not denying the lyrics he has aren't inventive, I just don't have any interest in someone rapping about objects in a room in an american accent.

But it just doesn't mean what you're saying. No-one agrees, no matter how many times you say that's what freestyling is. If that ever becomes the official meaning of freestyling then hiphop truly is dead. If I listen to a freestyle I wanna hear the man freestyling, if I just want to hear someone's pre-written bars I listen to an actual track. I know people who spit and freestyling still means exactly the same thing to them, if someone tried to use pre-written bars when they're supposed to be freestyling they'd get gunned for being a dickhead.

I'm sorry if I'm not down with this dumbing down of my culture. If freestyling changes its meaning to what you said, where is the skill in it? What is the point of it? Seriously, what the fuck would be the point of it?

Look now. Shit rappers can't freestyle, I get that. So now they try to change its meaning rather than saying "I can't freestyle" or getting shown up like Lil Wayne - fair enough. But if you accept that you're a moron, and you're accepting the dumbing down and destruction of all that is hiphop. Where would hiphop be without freestyling? If you're trying to kill freestyling, you're trying to kill hiphop.

lol stop being so preachy. the point is for a rapper to just get some new bars out without having to go studio etc instead they just do a quick youtube freestyle over a current beat and get it out to loads of fans.

what are you doing for hip hop? rather than telling me I'm trying to kill it.
