found sound/field recording thread

Post by hasezwei » Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:47 am

i got myself a zoom h1 today and i'm eager to try use it to take my productions to the next level. but the big question is: what should i record with it? now this is not meant like "tell me how to make my music", more like an exchange of ideas and tips et cetera. sharing inspiration with each others :W:

i mean there's obvious stuff like a bunch of keys or lighters for hihats and cars driving by et cetera, or all that burial stuff like rain and crackle. what i'm thinking about is going really crazy with sounds.
for example, when searching for threads i found something about a guy using pitched down seagulls. and i remember using a pitched multitap delay on a windy ambience with some bitcrushing to get something like... ice crystals floating in space or so :6:

so, what are your ideas?
i'll go hunting for sounds myself tomorrow and see what i can come up with, maybe if some of you feel like it we could even do a samplepack!

i was recording a bottle of pills being dropped on a granite counter. it makes a cool ''thwacking" sound that resembles a snare.

Honestly, just record everything, chop it up in an audio editor, throw it into a sampler, use your creativity, and see what comes out.

If you are trying to capture something specific, it will be a lot harder.

The tune in my sig uses stuff I recorded around my apartment for all of the drums...in fact most of my tunes do these days; I find it results in a lot of non-traditional sounding drums and more original sound overall (for me, at least).

You know, the weirdest thing for me is to hear all of these sounds out of context. They seem to take on a life of their own when dissociated from their original location. Phonography is fun!

just noticed, it's like photography. i went out to buy a windscreen and on the way i heard lots of awesome sounds. i could only record a fracture of them tho, and out of those only one or two are of decent quality. i managed to capture a kid singing in indian but it's buried between layers of wind, cars and footsteps in snow :(
but i spent about half an hour walking through an old hall behind the club i worked in and the cooling container plus the reverb of the giant hall provided an awesome drone, i can't wait to use paul stretch on it!

any nifty advice from experienced field recordists?

I got a sony pcm-m10 a while back that I take Everywhere with me. Once you realize how much sound there is that we filter out you start cursing yourself if you dont have it on you to capture the cool stuff.

Just listen and get anything that sounds interesting. Dump it every evening into your comp and start fresh the next day. And keep it all organized. And use t-marks!
