Yeah, man.. do it. Don't think twice. Any experience is still experience. Don't let people with the mentality of a 12 year old put you off

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
True. More than that, Indie films have to secure funding somehow. That could mean releasing a shitty little trailer to give them something to pitch. To be honest though, If I were the one doing a low budget film, I'd have it set in a house, on a couch. Like, ultra-low overhead, and let the dialogue and writing carry the movie. To try to make an action film on a low budget, in todays market, seems assinine. I may tell them this tonight. I will probably still do the audio. You only live once right?

I agree with you on that, but If I was you I would keep my views on film to myself. Its like them saying you should of used a dynamic, not a condenser.Grime Syndicate wrote:If I were the one doing a low budget film, I'd have it set in a house, on a couch. Now, 3, I don't exactly agree with your analogy. It's more like a film specialist telling me that making a breakcore track in this musical climate isn't gonna do much for my street cred. Not exactly his realm, BUT HE WOULDN'T EXACTLY BE WRONG. Naw mean?3za wrote:I agree with you on that, but If I was you I would keep my views on film to myself. It's not like I'm telling him to go digital instead of 16mm.... feel me?
Still, I agree its not my place, and pointless to mention at this point. Right or not.

Serious congrats man. That's a great intro if you're just into audio in general. I love sound design/editing. Best luck. Give this book a look-see.

Started it and haven't finished it yet, but very good, general info on meeting with producers and what is generally expected of sound guys (as Deadly brought up before)...

I'm actually glad it looks low budget. It takes some pressure off. I was nervous. The cat that posted the ad said the last one they did was hilbilly highway. lookitup... some medium-large names (Eddie Griffin among others) So, yeah, needless to say, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
It looks like the trailer was shot with just your ordinary every day hand held camera. Of course, if it's just a pitch trailer, for a low budget indie film it's to be expected. Generally no one ever sees these trailers, but of course with the internet the way it is today you can't hide anything.
They have a lot of music going on in the trailer, but it seems like the movie might be more dialogue heavy than action heavy if you ask me. Generally you don't see big scores for movies like that, it's more of an ambiance sort of thing. My guess is you'll probably do more work on sound design and FX than you will on actual score compositions, but that's just an assumption.
Who cares if you are "over your head" like you mentioned. Who knows, that could force you to push yourself to the next level. The way I see it, it's an experience that you just can't pass up. What better way to get your feet wet than with a low budget indie film, where people aren't going to be expecting a million dollar soundtrack out of it. Your chances of meeting, or even possibly exceeding expectations in this situation is very possible. No matter how you look at this, it's an awesome opportunity and there's nothing anyone can say to change that. Good luck man, I hope it works out. Even if the movie looks like shit from the trailer, I'll still probably keep an eye out for it just to see how the sound turns out.

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
If you want this for experience, go for it! If you expect money from this project, Be very weary. I have not heard you mention anything concrete after you met with the director/producer guy(s). Don't lift a finger as long as you don't have something concrete payment wise. You wouldnt be the first "sound guy" to get screwed by "indie" film makers.Grime Syndicate wrote:I'm actually glad it looks low budget. It takes some pressure off. I was nervous. The clip looks very low budget, so you should ask yourself: will I enjoy doing this for free. I can imagine doing a project you really like for experience. Find a good student project etc. Working with film people is a great learning experience.
About Pro Tools: only reason you might wanna use protools is because they send you a OMF file I guess, low budget film crews mostly just bounces straight from vegas/FCP.
Again; I dont wanna spoil the excitement, but be weary with these projects. Indie projects have excited and often over excited producers/directors. They tell you what they would like to happen, without making any concrete offers. Saying all this, I really hope all this is genuine and you learn and get paid!
Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
Also, just to add to my previous post. You're probably not going to be alone on this or anything. There's going to be a team of people working on the movie you'll probably have a lot of brains to pick about ideas on things to do. I think that should also help take some of the pressure off, as you'll always have some ideas coming at you to work with. Not to mention there's always DSF to find some brain picking material

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
yeh ask about a contract. i imagine youll be recording the dialogue, and expected to come up with any incidental bits to add atmosphere possibly (i would just get stuck in as much as possible, take on as much responsibility as u can handle, whatever they are paying you or however shit it might be, if you really want to go down that path then put in lots of hours and make it as good as you can, might open some doors). also i highly recommend trying to wedge as much electronic music in there as possible, please contact suicide dub for licensing info

 good luck btw

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
Word JBE, Yeah, I'm doing it. And it said right in the ad, budget has been alotted. This is not a for pay situation. But, they have said more than once that they need a permanent sound guy, which WOULD be paid. I figure fuck it. I could blow em away and earn some experience, fail miserably and learn something (doubtful tho, like you say), or likely, somewhere in between, which I'm just fine with. I'd be more than happy for something to put on my resume for the next movie.

Re: I'm dumbfounded right now.
Went to the board meeting. They had a room full of various crew (mostly on screen talent) in a board room, about thirty of us in all (though apparently they were missing some folks.) It's in a warehouse with a lot of dope equipment to make props/sets etc. The warehouse is in an industrial part of town, decent sized and rather nice. Their cameras' quality was brought into question as they aren't shooting in HD, and it's digital (but it is 24 or 30 frames per second, which is good I guess. I wouldn't fuckin know, really.) Didn't have the boom mic's available but they do have some. The actor turned scriptwriter/director knows much more about the writing, human side of things (networking, hollywood connections, securing shooting locations, etc etc) than the technical side of things. In fact, I'm absolutely essential to the process as he AND I see it. So that's good (in a heavy, mixed bag sort of way). Creatively, it's pretty wide open. I'm somewhat concerned about the quality of their mic's as I haven't seen em yet, and he wouldn't know a good mic from a tin can (god bless his ambitious little heart.)
As to the creative side, there're gonna be some native american scenes, and I see a lot of ethnic drumming in my future, etc etc. I'm definitely gonna squeeze in some 140 bpm work, there's no two ways about it
I mean, they picked me based on my soundcloud, so they liked what they heard (which makes sense from a movie producer's point of view. Dubstep, especially jump-up [but all of it really] is very flashy and theatrical.) What's NOT to love?

I'm hoping they're gonna go for something DnBish/Aggy Dubstep/Drumstep for the chase scenes and whatnot. The genre's shit-hot, so I don't see why they wouldn't. Really, I feel rather MORE prepared for this than when I looked at it originally. And as for the atmospherics, that's what I'm REALLY looking forward to. Had burial on loop lately to pass out to. Found a new appreciation for his work as of late. *tips hat to Gonzo Dj*
Oh, the dopest part, is I get to make my own title which will of course roll during credits and all that. I'm gonna pick something ridiculously highbrow. LOL. Chief Executive Sound Design Film Score Shit Don't Stink Fucking Audio God. Watch me.

Also, even if the script turns out to be cheesy as shit, and the film is awful, I figure, as long as I do my job, and shit sounds right, well, what more can be done. Stills looks good on the resume, I'll just tell prospective employers to turn the video right off before peeping it!

Firstly, kudos on getting this job mate. This sort of thing doesn't come along often, fair play and I hope it works out well for youGrime Syndicate wrote:Someone besides Phigure.
However...
That trailer makes the film look absolutely shite, I'm afraid to say. If they do have a $500k budget, I'd be very interested to know exactly what they've spent it on. It smacks of final year media student project in my eyes; acting is atrocious, framing of the shots is terrible, and the whole thing just looks cheap
