that "annoying gated string sound" in my tune battle shizzle is similar just linked ot a silent kick
i don't get why people slag off sidechaining, i can see when it's used as an excuse for not eqing and not doing a good mix, but as an effect with proper eq etc and the vibe it can add is so great when used right

it's just a bit boring after a while when everyone does it. not so much in dubstep but i doubt there's ANY house-tune nowadays without that horribly overdone "white noise sidechained to kick after drop" shit going on. just saying, i think it's somewhat comparable to phasers, flangers and the likes. it's been rinsed to death when it was new so nowadays it's considered cheesy, but if you use it as a subtle tool it can lift a decent sound into heaven (and hopefully the rest of the tune with it)

It also IS used and touted as a means for shoehorning things into a mix. Cool effect in places, yes. But it really robs true space IMO.
I wouldnt say it was bad to help a sound clear another using compression. People are so against this but surely its just another form of automation? how many times have you made a sound that you like but had to change it or other sounds more drastically than you would like, in order for them to sit right in a track? sidechaining just means the level of compression is triggered, therefore the sound is only at the desired level for the period of time you need or want it to be. i.e. a pad in the background, lightly filling the stereo spectrum, that you want to pull through on the break or at the end of each 8 bar, sidechaining means you can do this. some would argue you just make another sample with some attack on it or w.e. but its easier to be accurate with a compressor and also means the core sound stays the same.
Also you try just slapping some sidechain on a simple 4x4 house rythm you got going on, it wont just be clean and have that housey pump like you would expect. The sounds cant be too sharp or carry too much release themselves, or you will find the previous scores interfering with the next series of scores.
Compression in general is a technique that is used to set boundaries for sounds, so if the boundaries are not constant, some sort of automation must be used, such as sidechaining (triggered comrpession).
anyways deviating from the thread a bit, sounds like 2 seperate compressors with the same trigger maybe?
He takes the vocal out and works around it to make it much much more sombre than than the original.
Sorry lack of whitenoise sidechaining. Lots of filter swept whitenoise washes though!
I actually love this tune. Shame he didn't just keep the "he came for me, just like I knew he would" line and leave out literally all the rest. The pad/stab thing is sick.
LOL I remember when it was going around that people where swearing off compressors all together. Jokes. But seriously, to each their own. I use it in pretty much every tune.
I think the effect in this track is rather interesting. It makes the drums the controlling element over all else, whereas usually (especially in dubstep), it's the bassline.
Also, you can't become masterful at anything unless you overdo it. You gotta find the boundaries.
