I do like this thread but I'm not entirely on board with it. You used an exercise analogy but that kinda lets you down because you have to have rest days with that too if you want to be properly healthy. Just like I feel if you want to be a healthy musician you need to have rest days from that too.

Doing too much of anything aint gonna be good.

If I sit down to work and find all I'm making is shit that day I normally push through and try a different genre or look up some scales or something instead but some days I just think word I'm just gonna play videogames and learn to cook something new today.

You let down Berlusconi.

You let down Rocky

Worst of all, you've let down America.

These terrorists seem pretty happy though:

It's been ages since I've posted on this forum, but after reading this post I had to log in and say thanks! What an entertaining and useful post. Now I'm gonna go climb a mountain and try to grow a beard! :z:

Heres what I wrote in the last thread like this, some stuff to try when you run out of ideas or have writers block. I agree you need to keep being productive, but taking some time to reset the brain is more efficient and effective than just doing the same things ad naueseam imo.
erratech wrote:Make some tunes :6:

Make some patches, listen to random music or open random unfinished projects and see if any ideas are worth salvaging (or just wonder what the fuck you were thinking :o ). Maybe read some tehnical/technique stuff (or watch youtubes I guess, I find them untrustworthy and timeconsuming tho). Ill often rewrite a song thats half finished, change the tempo/sounds/melodic content/drums, although thats a bit of a judgement call - sometimes I do all the above many times before it is "right", but if your stuck its better than dragging out some mediocre shit.

Consume and appreciate some other form of art. TAKE A BREAK, if youre not getting any progress do something else that you enjoy, or shit you put off and hate. Visit some mates, or go for a walk, go to a cafe/look at trinkets, ring your mum you slack tnuc -w- . Try and write something with a different vibe/genre to what youre comfortable with. Take a sound and make it Perfect, make a rediculously convoluted fx chain where the elements are so subtle noone will really know theyre there except you, needle drop random terrible terrible opshop records while youve got it recording till you cant take it anymore, then cut them into samples. Make a piano/organ piece- start with a few chords and just build layers till it is nonsense and strip it back down to something that works. Chop some vox, download acapellas that you have never heard of or that are rediculously shit - I can practically guarantee there will be a useable word or line in there somewhere. Try and understand a sound. Take a sound and randomly effect and resample until it is the most useless sound in existance, then repeat a few times.

If youre still out of ideas after youve tried all that then I dont know what the fuck to tell you, maybe stop writing and force yourself to stay stopped till the urge to write is literally a compulsion you cannot control anymore lol. That turned into a fucking essay, be glad youre around youre music making gear. Good luck.

this world is just too much about running a rat race
u kno, u should be able to juice some happiness out of your life without blowing somebody's socks off
arent the answers supposed to be inside of you
who should you prove your worth to? mom? dad? chicks?
in the end of the day, its just going to boil down to this one question. who are u?
and dont tell me you're this and that,
cuz look at the faces of joy orbison, look at the faces of james blake
listen to their music. is they happy?
they sure are succesful, but is they geniunely happy?
so dont tear your ass up, trying this and that just to follow suit,
there are ppl out there who can make tunes all day, without ever busting a sweat u know,
and there's only one reason for it. do u know it?
it was always fun for them and they kept it that way,
and the days off and the inspiration they provide
is an integral part of that fun...
srsly, no offence and no pun intended,
just look around, stop the rat race...
its only you...bring that peace into your life...
bring that love...make those wishes,
those plans really consistent with the true nature of a human being,
its soul...dont give up your freedom for nothing,
follow your instincts you know,
go for a run in the forrest,
watch the birds, the cats play,
watch the sun, the skies, the clouds and the stars,
life is not about achievement,
and sooner or later u do realize it,
most times tho it will happen when you're way old,
and when you are at that age,
remembering how you sweated your ass
in fronted of a computer screen and a daw
is not smth you would love to remember,
instead i'm sure you'd love to reminesce over
how you rode a bicycle or how you talked to that girl...you know, the real thing
in the music biz, there are too many ppl copycating each other,
and if you want some pats on the back over at soundcloud,
go ahead,
but if you want to break thru and live a life,
there are many more ways to come up with awsome chuunes than sweat,
so please, go on and take that break, smoke a blunt,
chill with friends and have fun)))
