Self promotion techniques

Post by benjam » Thu Dec 30, 2010 8:26 pm

Just wondering if people have any ingenious ways of getting themselves heard?
Everyone uses soundcloud etc but has anyone thought of any unusual approaches for instance i was considering burning a stack of CDs to leave randomly around unis and venues with just a website written on. Im aware this probably isnt very original but anyone else have any thoughts?

Here's a little story that happened on the 27th..

I walked into the pub, one of the club owners from my area was there.
I said "How come you never got back to me about that mix?"
He says "I'm really sorry lad, come down to the club tomorrow and I'll let you get sorted out!"

Life is good :h:

Just do as you said and also talk to club owners, studio peoples etc and you're golden!

Don't just leave them lying about. Take a few (10-20) out with you every time you go to a night/party where the sort of music you are into might be played. Talk to people. DJs, promoters, bar staff, clubbers etc etc. Give them a CD. Make sure the CD has your full contact name & details printed on it. Do this for a month.

The next month, do exactly the same with a brand new CD. Rinse and repeat.

[This technique is tried & tested, and works well for both DJ mixes and original productions]

whore that shit out, dude. myspace, facebook, twitter. try to get people at local radio stations to play it every now and than. go to clubs and make friends with the resident dj's ask them if they could drop it. promote your self same as you would with ANY product. after all, youre still selling something. just because its dubstep doest make it any different.
Soundcloud
i need suggestions for this.

See im just after listeners atm Im too romantic about music I love the idea that you would stumble across a disk somewhere and love the music even without ever finding out who made it. Some of my favourite tunes have no artist info and I love the fact I might never find out. You know what I mean?

Disagree. Some little fat girl in Iowa could be the Mozart of Dubstep right now, but if she's not letting anyone know then in that cornfield she will remain.

Ah, you want some alternative ways of doing it. Gotcha.

Same thing with the CDs, but don't give them to people. Leaving them on public transport would work, as would leaving them under the wipers of cars that look like they might have fat sound systems in them.

The stack of CDs in a shop somewhere is a good idea, but bear in mind that if someone in the shop sees them and didn't know specifically that you'd left them and why, they might bin them without any contact details.

If you really wanted to push the envelope, try running frantically through a city street as though you're being chased. Grab someone randomly, give them a CD saying "Please, they're after me!", then sprint off again looking over your shoulder as you run.

It's a technique adapted from an early guerilla marketing campaign by rapper Master P. He gave his first mixtapes out to the people in his neighbourhood with the nicest cars and the loudest stereos for free, so that his tracks would be playing as they cruised around.

Trust, they won't. Curiousity is human nature. For every 1 that bins it, 9 will keep it.

who wants to help contribute to a group effort for proper marketing strategies and how to know if you're ready to send demos out to labels for my blog?
