That is tough to answer but basically if you are unsure then you probably aren't ready.Kes-Es wrote:How do you know you're at a decent level?deadly habit wrote: a lot of people need to learn to exercise some amount of quality control over their own work before it hits the next step of sharing with anyone else

I was really just being cheeky, I feel like I've gotten to that point, I haven't heard anything to the opposite effect but you're right it really is a tough thing to gauge.
You can be hearing nothing but good, but pushing a sound a lot of labels aren't interested in or just pushing to the wrong labels, that's what I'm thinking for me specifically, but yeah, I agree.
A conglomeration of my old tearout tunes I like, and my new ones I don't

just a question : are you Burial ?benjaminC wrote:See im just after listeners atm Im too romantic about music I love the idea that you would stumble across a disk somewhere and love the music even without ever finding out who made it. Everyone uses soundcloud etc but has anyone thought of any unusual approaches for instance i was considering burning a stack of CDs to leave randomly around unis and venues with just a website written on. Im aware this probably isnt very original but anyone else have any thoughts?
Don't just leave them lying about. Take a few (10-20) out with you every time you go to a night/party where the sort of music you are into might be played. Talk to people. DJs, promoters, bar staff, clubbers etc etc. Give them a CD. Make sure the CD has your full contact name & details printed on it. Do this for a month.
The next month, do exactly the same with a brand new CD. Rinse and repeat.
[This technique is tried & tested, and works well for both DJ mixes and original productions]

What kind of works for me (back in my rapping days) was to create a quality project. Not a demo but something you 'could' release as an lp or ep if you had a fan base. Something high in production quality. In my case I took 20 of my very best tunes and payed someone to mix and master them. Also anything with a cool, user friendly theme. I did remixes of old school Disney songs and made them sweet. While you are making these projects contact bloggers, dj's, radio shows, clubs, promoters, etc. ANYONE who is influential and who's job or goal is to get good quality music of a certain kind (dubstep, urban, electronic etc.) to the people. Let them well in advance what your project is, who you are and what you are doing. Give them singles, mixes, your best tracks, and a release date and any info on shows you are doing plus where to find more of your music. Then lock yourself in the lab and finish your damn project. When it's done and it's good (and you know it's good because you showed it to people you trust and who's oppinion you value and they said it's good) release it and give that shit away for free. Get email adresses from the downloaders (bandcamp!!!) and keep in touch with them. Send a monthly newsletter, do a blog, tweet, Facebook. Social network with your new fans. Let them know what you are doing. Do a shot ton of shows and play your free stuff you made and the new stuff you are working on for you upcoming project. Bring CDs to your shows and give them away. Most of the promoters you contact will help you once they see you're serious and not some kid with a laptop who is just fooling around.
Rinse repeat until you have enough fans to be able to release an album and charge a very small amount for it. Of 10% of 10,000 people pay for it you are well on your way. Then give out more free music and projects till you reach a goalyou personally set for downloads or emails etc. and release another lp or ep. At this point labels will start to contact you.
If you can do this yourself without a label they will find you because you are going to make them money. Not the other way around. They don't want to take a big risk. You are not just soliciting demos to them, you're busy being successful.

while some people don't agree with this statement I think it's the best starting point.Depone wrote:First and foremost - Write great music. It will get heard
MAKE GREAT MUSIC / HAVE A MARKETING STRATEGY / NETWORK WITH OTHER PRODUCERS
while you can mt eden yourself to fame by spamming shit music all over the net, you'll go further if you have great music to spam all over the net
