Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
Sorry, i dropped this in the old december thread late last night.... really late it seems.
@Cheeky, real bassline feel to it, like the key change, but the snares waaay at the back of the mix, you need to toughen it up/boost its volume. Also pan your percs just a little bit, it helps your bassline become the centre of attention without being annoying on headphone (100% panned percs do my head in on cans)
@nnny Dream love the piano/strings , the delay and reverb is real beautiful mayn and those samples come in perfectly. Your first sub note sounds two semis (keys on the keyboard) too high tho, and you need ever so slightly to boost your centre mids on your snare, else it'll sound like a crash on some tinnier speakers and iPod headphones. PM me when its done, I'm THAT into the sound of it!
@Bass Sedation, beautiful drop. Although you may need to vary up that intro a bit more, and no doubt you're going to slap a sub under that bass so I wont bother suggesting it! Love the open feel to the mix, but the midrange @ about 350 needs boosting on that screamy drill you got on the drop else it will sound thin on a system, and your kick needs a bit more thump around 100hz and again at 60. Massive potential tho, bet the automation was a bitch! Btw am I right in guessing you made this on either home speakers with no sub bass response or a reallly sub heavy system??
Here's mine, first serious releaseworthy attempt at some purple shit!

gen_: fuck im really lovin this. perfect distortion on that bassline. perfect melodies. really nice samples. only thing i wasnt fond of was the simple drum loop for the intro, but the drop into those synths made me forget about it. favoriting this and following you without a doubt! big up
kayadubz-- pre meditated: f intro is some dark business. sick lfo automation. your snare is a little quiet but it might just be my headphones. i'd try adding in more samples throughout it just to keep the beat al ittle more bouncy and the song a little more interesting. love the synths tho theyre pretty sweet
nny: intro is sooooooooooo damn good. definitely feeling the asian vibes on it. nice bassline and melodies too. something that iw ould do (not saying you should ) is try to find some japanese drum samples to go along with this too. taiko drums, etc. i think implementing those in there somehow would give this track a little more depth (and it's got a l ot already)
ummm cooked this up after a few frustrating days of scrapping everything i made. listened to a minimal dnb mix and some how attained inspiration!

Shit thanks I think that's the best response I ever had anywhere!
Liking that percussion thingie that you filter in when you start the tune, and the slow, almost tense pace you create with the space between your subs. Psy sounds in the back are a nice touch too, but you could bring them up in the mix a little, I only caught them near the end. Good track tho.
just so you know, the January WIPs thread is up so you may wanna copy paste your stuff over there, the mods still haven't got over their new years hangover or summat.
EDIT: Oh shit Im in the January thread :corntard
Looks I havent got over the new years hangover or summat.

@Non-Xero -
absolutely wicked little percussion samples in there. Ive just got myself a recorder as well, been recording so many wicked little soundbites. Only thing i would say is that the main bass line @1.16 and wherever else it is in song is very muddy, could do with some eq work. The lead synth is crisp and sounding good. I think the arrangement could use a little work, as often it feels like theres too much goin on, the track sounds a lot better in the bits where its been given some room to breathe.
@ Mr Hello /exitblindness -
untitled 24/12/10
love the pads at the start, all sounding lush but as you said theres a prob with the volume and certain things being too squashed and not coming through enuf. I think the bass has this problem too. The subtle fx that pop up in the background every now and again are absolutely amazin. i love the tune overall, its musically great.
untitled 2
the second wip is sick as well. When the percussion comes in it really picks it up. Im a fiend for those warm upright bass sounds as well. However, it is sounding quite muddy in total. Try eqing out some of the mid on some things to give other elements room.
p.s im up for trading more detailed feedback with one another, give me a pm. really feelin your style so dnt mind doin that at all.
@gen0 - purple track
love it. things bouncing off each other nicely, great use of the stereo field. And the overall progression of the tune is great, had me nodding my head all the way through! sorry i cant be more critical! just an all round phat tune.
Here is my newest WIP - still loads to be done i.e the basslien! but see what you think anyhow.

...
and oh yeah:
@Rubycon Nice ambient vibes... Dead chilled, my kind of thing
Love when the drums come in, love the drums. All seems to work together. This tunes got heaps of potential. Oh, and vocal sample - spot on.
@Nylle Love it! Dark as fuck, but not so keen on the kickdrum. Not sure, just seems to clubby for me, needs to be dirtier
@Kidstrange Liking the sub man, niiiiiice.

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
@ NNY- (terrible vibrations, edit 4 the most recent I presume?) Drums kick pretty well and the filtery pad parts are cool. But I'd like to hear a bit more bass in there and the chord prog is overly simple I think, the sounds work but could evoke a lot more.
@ Kaya- (pre-meditated) definitely like that beat. Not feeling the bass but that's just my taste- though the alternations on the 4th loop each time is really cool. Not sure the hats should straighten up for so much of the track though.
@ Gen- (spaceman) the kick sounds a bit dodgy, like it's been cut too short, but it works when the rest of the track kicks in so maybe that's cool. Really nice first synth sounds. Not much to complain about, good job.
@ Nylle- (crawler) really feeling all the sounds in this, really deep/dark. But the pattern of the wobble parts between the subs doesn't work for me, it clashes with the dark vibe in my opinion (the notes, not the sound)
@ Rubicon- beat in diving is just bang on, really works when the shuffly bit and the synth comes in. I know it's more of a rolling track but could maybe hit a bit harder when the bass comes in, could either way though. Vocals really are nice, good job making them present but quite background. There's a sort of syncopated vocal/hat sample in there (one used in a ton of tunes) that aggs me a bit, I can't really explain that better. I think you could do more with that flutey sound that jumps in every so often. Feeling the o no no too, sounds finished to me though really so not much to comment on. (sorry about dodgy looking pm too)
Here's a slightly older one of mine but still a WIP. It's longwinded as it is so I'd be happy with comments on any of my tracks really.

i posted this in the december thread, like a straight up donk. haha
________________________________________________________
nnny - dream in oriental - wow. it felt like i went on a journey. it is so musical and was a lovely break from fast paced wacky bass lines. bravo!
gen_ - i dont know why, but i get a slight daft punk vibe. all the transitions are $$$ and well put together. im definitely a fan!
Bass Sedation - "beast" is right. the whole build up is filled with epicness and the laying/sampling/whatever you call it in the first drop is so ridic, i love it. i also love the 16th on the hihats for the double time feel and the half time bass/snare. its like drinking an energy drink while you burn
heres my current WIP. its changed a few times, and will probably change again. i also need to work on the transition from the beginning to the dance part. im also very proud of the drop at the end. please please please give me tips, comments or pointers. i just started producing no more than two months ago and need some guidance. thank you!

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
@ Gen_ I was really sceptical when I heard that intro with that (imo) horrible snare sample but everything turned out allright, lovely intro.
The drop wasn't as big as I expected but I love the vibe in it.
Overall I would change that snare sample, add some reverb to it, give it a tad more tail.
Amazing job!
@ Nylle loving those crispy clicks.
Exactly my kind of Dubstep mate, really dark with a nice emotion to fill it all up.
@ Rubiconguava Lovely intro, really giving me a moment to think of what's coming.
I, personally, think the part where the drums hit is really important, and you nailed it.
Love those background sounds.
Overall splendid laidback track, definitely something I would play in the summer with a nice pint of Stella!
@ Nnny Those drums and that piano give it a really dark kind of atmosphere.
Personally, I think the intro is a tad too long and to repetitive, some variation in notes would be amazing.
The synth after the drop could use some beefing up to add on that atmosphere.
Looking forward to the final version of this one!
@ Dublicks That intro is a bit random tbh.
Notes also sound way off the beat.
Seems like you just took some cool sounding loops and sounds and blended them together.
Can't really comment much considering I'm feeling you're pretty new to producing.
Read up some thread around here, experiment a bit more and get those notes right.
Don't give up, I feel that big things will come from you!
@ mr Hello Yet again a pretty mysterious dark intro.
Really liking those shakers at the beginning and those randoms blips, nice panning on those!
Not too fond of that sharp synth tho, I personally think it's too much.
@ Nnny Read above, synth seems right to me!
Splendid track!
@ Filthy_ Nice work with those hats there.
Those sweeps seem to come straight of a Datsik tho, seem to fit in well in this one.
I went a bit "wtf?" @ 1:00 tho, not really feeling that part there.
I've been working on my previous track for months and figured I'm making my tracks way too complicated and too crowded.
Therefor I convinced myself I could get a decent track out of simple workflow.
Really curious if the end result is as good as I thought.
Please give me some pointers what I could change to make this one my best ever.

Cheers!

@Cubicle Ta for the comment bud. Apart from the bass, I think this is awesome, LOVING the drums. Atmosphere is nice, everything. Just the bass I'm not fond off. Not sure why, just sounds a little wrong to me. It could possibly be the fact that I'm listening through laptop speakers, so Ill address this when I have working headphones again
They kicked the bucket on me today I'm afraid =/

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
@Gen, you gots mad skills son. Only listening on laptop speakers, but I wish I could rock those 8 bit styles like that.
Reminds me of the japanese windmill level on tekken 2, bit with a bosh by sonic. Shit hot.
Although get a little length on the intro drums, or add something to counteract their static-ness.
Phat shit.

i need some quick help. my track, listening to it through my sound card and monitors, it doesnt sound too bad at all. i tried to listen to it on my phone via. sound cloud and on a different laptop and i really couldnt hear a lot of the stuff. the basses in particular.
i have them ran into a bus (no main output from the tracks) and i put the EQ and effects on a single track so i dont kill my processor. should i just up the volume on the bus or reEQ it and bring out some mid frequencies?
thanks!

@@sqwuabblesmynig:: professor green tune is ill man. love the bass. sounds like some times the volume of the bass synths are louder than the other bass synths. and id maybe turn up the low ends a little bit. other than that i think its pretty solid. good drum kit and beat. nice use of the mechanical samples. would love to hear whatever else youre workin in exchange for some feedback.

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
@nonXero - not feeling it at all. The tones are all over the place. Your rides and crashes, even your kick don't sit well within the mix cos they're all out of tune with each other. Your bass could do with a little more top-end as well, try throwing an exciter on it to make it a little brighter. I will give you points though for putting enough in the track to keep it interesting. Hard thing to do.
@dannydubstep - needs more bass, and I think the automation on your lfo needs to be looked at as I (personally) don't think it suits the beat all that well. However, the riff/melody you're using I think is very catchy, good job on that.
@snick - I got a soft spot for viola in dubstep (well, any classical instrument really), so kudos to you for taking the plunge. I find it very hard to balance classical intruments with synthesized sounds. The drums you've 'chosen in the intro are beautiful. Love the wood block/rim shots with the delay you got going. Layers very nicely with the hats. Tbh I would have wished you continued with that bassline that comes in during the break, I found it very interesting, but probably stereo-widened a bit too much.
@mr hello - freakin' love it mate. Not enough chilled dubstep imo. I think it needs more variation but otherwise I really like where it's headed. Never heard your stuff before, you deserve a follow
I also really love the broken beats you've got going. I definitely feel some burial inspiration there as well (without sounding like burial). I think the pad could probably do with a little more variance, but otherwise really good!
@wingweaver - kind of a funky tune you got going there. The midrange could do with another layer sitting on top and/or a little more high-end just to make them sparkle a little more. Whenever you take out too much high-end, it just make the whole track sound low-passed. Keep it up!
@edn - I'm not feeling it, just because it's too different to what I listen to, however - it is a quality production. I think the drums need to be brought forward a bit more, they seem a bit too quiet in comparison with everything else.
@kayadubz - first and foremost, kudos to you for reading the rules and getting right into the right atmosphere on a wip thread. Good job
Kinda disappointed by your track tbh. The intro was leading up to something truly unique, then the massive wobblez came in and I immediately lost interest
Some of the sounds you've used are really nice, but those wobblez are so overdone I just can't listen to them anymore. Your midrange definitely needs more weight though. They seemed very light, as @paravrais mentioned. Your new track is dope, love the vocal samples and the work you've done with them. I think the beat needs some work though - they're just not punchy enough. Imo I think you should destroy the wobbles - that high-resonance synth you've got going is great, partner it with something else
@nnny - in future, just don't post until you've put up responses
@gen_ - ah, the purple sound. People say this is overdone but I completely disagree. I really like what you've done, keep up the good work
That stabbing bassline is freakin' awesome, but I'd probably mono it, then add some play on the sides as well - this will ensure it plays well on most systems. Fantastic riffs and melody - check out my work, I'd love to collab with you
@rubicon - my friend you are really making some progress. Diving is a really nice journey! Utmost respect for people who play around with snare positioning. Also, the little rim shot drum rolls you got going on around the place is awesome. Where is that vocal from? Fits beautifully!!! I think the kick needs a tad more punch, to really make the track hit home on the dancefloor (because there is absolutely no reason this track can't be a banger
) And on that note, please get in touch with me once you're 100% with this. Would like to drop this in the club, lemme know
@cubicle - bass isn't too bad but I think it would work better as low-passed reese with a more hollow sound. Just my opinion of course
Pads are very nice. Beat sits well, but something about the kick agitates me, not sure what it is. Some variation on the snare's position would work well also.
Nothing new from me today guys - got something in the backburner atm that I'm really happy with but it's not ready for critique. Just thought I'd pop in and see what everyone is up to
@dannydubstep - needs more bass, and I think the automation on your lfo needs to be looked at as I (personally) don't think it suits the beat all that well.

Good job

@nnny - in future, just don't post until you've put up responses

@gen_ - ah, the purple sound. People say this is overdone but I completely disagree. I really like what you've done, keep up the good work

@rubicon - my friend you are really making some progress. Diving is a really nice journey! Utmost respect for people who play around with snare positioning. Also, the little rim shot drum rolls you got going on around the place is awesome. Where is that vocal from? Fits beautifully!!! Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for JANUARY, 2011
Don't mean to be rude, but care to explain? I didnt post a track there, I left a comment for Cubicle. When I did post my track I only left 1 feedback because that's all the new tracks that were uploaded since I last posted, where I had left 3 feedback messages.amphibian wrote: @nnny - in future, just don't post until you've put up responses![]()
