please tell me who sounded like skrillex 2 years ago, i'd be interested to know!
what is cutting edge about that? there is some snippets of interesting things in some of his songs but mainly just a bunch of wobbles we have heard before. maybe it is just me but i dont see what is so groundbreaking about his music, just a fusion of few different things. ill admit his other stuff isnt as shit as i first thought but still, what is so amazing about his wobbles and bass cause personally i dont get it?

dont see why people get butt hurt over producers like this. everyone goes on about this guy as if hes some next level producer making groundbreaking stuff, i swear the only people who would be impressed by this are americans/people who are new to dubstep/bass music which i can understanddeadly habit wrote:look out, when i said i don't get it i had someone create an alias to come after me

yeah he just put the talking preset on massive and assigned the lfo to the cutoff filter, then pressed the masterize button, nothing new or original here.therzbm wrote:dont see why people get butt hurt over producers like this. everyone goes on about this guy as if hes some next level producer making groundbreaking stuff, i swear the only people who would be impressed by this are americans/people who are new to dubstep/bass music which i can understanddeadly habit wrote:look out, when i said i don't get it i had someone create an alias to come after me

Re: Skrillex - how to. (massive tutorial)
like i've said before he's got engineering chops and a decent producer (though i think deadmau5 has something to do with that if you ever peeped some of his old stuff)
i just don't get all the hype or what makes it so great or appealing from a dancefloor standpoint, then again i'm not into 50 million bass changeups within the course of 16 bars when it comes to dubstep i dig either
i just don't find it appealing or danceable and i hate those moshing brotards at parties
i like harder/darker music
i like dancefloor fun
this does neither for me
prolly the same reason i love spor's dnb, love his shit as feed me for house, hate his dubstep

Cutting edge was, and still is, Bar9, period. Nobody sounded like before, and nobody is still close to some of there tunes. I'll be honest, i found it hard at first to listen to their tunes, because most of aimed at the dancefloor, so didn't have much musical context, but i NEVER put down their sound design and engineering work. I remember when i first heard their piano song for the 1st time, and when it dropped... i was like wow, and offed it... only after a substantial amount of time, i actually managed to sit down and listen to the full song... quite rare for me. Bar9 were some of the original filth wobblers, now that's cutting edge ( in the wobble area that is)

Re: Skrillex - how to. (massive tutorial)
I just listened to that bar 9 song, and to say that it's cutting edge in any way is rediculous. I like it but the sound is more generic than any of skrillex's stuff. It's just using a bitcrusher on what sounds like a square wave. rediculously easy song. in regards to feed me, whether you like him or not is about personal taste, but the fact of the matter is that I have yet to hear anything like Blood red in the world of debstep, where as doctor p, flux pavillion among countless others use that same bitcrusher vowel synth to make so many of their sounds. Feed me and skrillex are light years ahead of the pack as far as sound design and musical ability are concerned. personally I don't like skrillex all that much but i can't deny the kid's got skills. Whereas bar 9 is indistinguishable from so many others.

Maaann if you like his tunes you like his tunes... if not then you dont. no big deal.
Re: Skrillex - how to. (massive tutorial)
No resampling, no fancy shit, just a stupid Modern Talking Osc through a hardclipper, classic tube and dimension expander. Modulate the wavetable position and add in some stuff and you're good to go.

Because stereotyping a landmass inhabited by 300 million people isn't at all as erroneous as enjoying music?therzbm wrote:the only people who would be impressed by this are americans/people who are new to dubstep/bass music which i can understand
Seriously, I thought metal elitists were bad. I love the community around dubstep because lots of the people I talk to are nice people who use music to express emotion, not to appeal to people like you, or anyone. Musicians should really band together, because we are a selective group on this Earth, rather than spending time talking shit about others' creations. There's obviously a cool, futuristic appeal to Skrillex's music. I've been down the musical douchebag route too, and I came to realize it isn't helpful or worth it. Obviously a lot of people will use Skrillex as a gateway artist into the deeper parts of dubstep, and if they want to make their own in the process, then who's to say they can't?

Tbh if thats what you call reverse engineering, he's not done a very good job. Although i agree it can be useful to know how other artists make their sounds as it makes it easier for you to develop your own sound, this tutorial sends people in the completely opposite direction. My advice to the creator of this video: Don't quit the day job.

One learns to sing by singing other songs. One learns to play guitar by playing other songs and styles. Artists of all types often follow a simple process of mimcry until they see the things they like and don't like about different styles and create their own style based on the things they like.
