alright I think this is will be the week where benji finally comes into his own and gives listeners what has been missed so much about mary anne's show, and thats the special mixes that let the producers showcase their sound. Not only only does he have two guets mixes this week, hes featuring two of the most interesting producers atleast in my eyes making music right now. Everyhting instra:mental related is a gold even if its only one half. All of boddika material herd in the last few months has sounded really fresh, and JamCity not only has tremdous taste in music but a forthcoming album which he hopefully fetaure in his mix, both reasons why im looking forward to this week's show and hopefully it sets the standard for a for the rest of the year. Big things indeed, and I think we'll be alright with out the sexy ms. Hobbs, Tune in.

Boddika´s Guest Mix disappointed me too :smurf: Jam City was mediocrity :ukking:

I really like the new show and he still plays some of the best music being produced today however it is a shame the show is only 2 hours long!

When he had 3 hours he would squeeze in old and new jazz, funk, soul, rare groove, experimental, dub, latin sounds, hip hop, disco etc

The new format seems to be all about new music on the same tip as MAHs show. It has lost some of the other interesting aspects I use to enjoy

Jazz

Disagree completely about Jam City being Hype. Genuinely good stuff that mixes genres effortlessly. Good ears for melody, great production. Future sounds all the way. Nothing hype about it.
Agree completely with the FRYING WOTUS comment. What a shit album. Will not be tuning in next week. Lost all interest in this producer.
Agree about the Jamie xx mix too.

Don't give a fuck about hiphop, jazz, indie latin sounds??? lol, just wanna hear new UK bass music to be honsest. This isn't a hipster shop where you can listen to music, read books and drink coffee in tight jeans sporting a beard and oversize glasses. (just joking)

Yesterday's show was good. Keep up the good work Benji. But as I said, I'll skip on the flying lotus show.

Considering he likes to mention regularly that he works at Radio 1 in as many posts as he can (i'm guessing he makes the tea? ) it kind of lacks professionalism that he's openly slating one of the few DJ's who get to showcase good music on the station, and someone he seems to work with in some capacity. Not a good look. If you don't like, don't listen!

Big up Benji for doing your thing.

i prefer the benji b show to MAH, he plays more hip hop and funky housey kind of stuff.. as opposed to a lot of quite shit and boring dubstep that MAH played, not to say she allways played shit, i loved some of her shows, just never could be fucked to sit and listen to the whole thing.

I think Benji's new show is still a work in progress. He's still trying to go for that that broad appeal that MAH's show supposedly had. None of his BBC1 shows can touch the ones that he did on 1xtra, but bringing in guests like Boddika are probably a good start in the right direction. However, Boddika's music is specifically appealing to me, I am wondering why he didn't have instra:mental do the guest mix as that collective has much broader appeal.

I'd really like to see him feature guest mixes by the likes of Quest and Silkie, Ramadanman, Girl Unit, and other producers that have nice broad appeal but carry across what is truly good music in this scene today.

Honestly I really enjoy hip-hop but the hip-hop he plays is mostly just crap with the occasional choice Big Boi track thrown in. He has played that Hounds of Hate tune, "Tumble Down Slow" many times and that is exactly the kind of product he should be promoting. But then again, I'm just a stupid American so what the hell do I know.

FWIW, the greatest thing Benji has ever done was to turn things over to Loefah to let him play 5 or 6 tunes in a row - each one was fucking brilliant.

Agree with you there. I know I'll get my ass reamed for this one but hours of Mala and Burial and other really deep, repetitive dubstep is a fucking bore.

The latest show was great. Both the Boddika mix and the Jam City mix were awesome.

Agree with the comments on Fly Lo. He dropped off after LA. Cosmogramma was poor and so was the Pattern+Grid World EP. Really bored by him.

Don't get the Jam City being all hype comment. Really feeling his stuff. It's got a nice, dark edge and splinters of old grime in there. Love his sound.

Jamie XX is terrible. Haven't heard anything good from him. It's all just bland, middle of the road slightly dubsteppy stuff. No character to it.

from what i remember, mary ann hobbs had quite a bit of variety in her shows, not just dubstep.....

yes this is an incorrect statement.

She featured a lot of dubstep, but also very different music. Rustie, Nosaj Thing, Moderat, even Juke in the later episodes...to say that it was just digital mystikz and burial is really not giving enough credit. Remember that special with King Cannibal and Scorn? It'll be centuries before we hear that stuff on radio 1 in Belgium, no matter what timeslot.

I'm on the fence about Benji. I only tuned into that Jamie XX mix (the kid has talent, and his mix was very inspired), but I do like the variety of Benji's shows. Deep stuff is all well and good but you need a mixture.

I would like to see Benji use the privileged platform he has to break more good music from new artists rather than new music from good established artists.

i've often though that, it's a good reason why what you and blackdown do is so good, maybe he feels that at the top of radio food chain you have to play those artists? less freedom or something like that on the beeb?

Doesnt seem like it...

"Having the opportunity and blank canvas to play the music I love and the freedom to represent the artists I believe in, on the biggest national broadcasting platform, without any commercial influence, playlisting, advertising, or bias, is a privilege that most DJs and broadcasters around the world could only dream of – and one that I am extremely fortunate to have."
