Re: Rusko producing for Britney Spears!
Wow there's a lot of people shitting their pants over this.
If you have that little faith in the music that you love that you think one record can spoil it, then you need to re-assess your interest in it.
If you have no interest in pop music, and are only into underground music, then keep it like that. Dedicate your energies to keeping the underground strong, and stop crying about things that you don't really understand.
If you DO like pop music, then you should appreciate this is probably a great move for all concerned. Britney has made some amazing singles in the past - nobody can deny 'Slave 4 U', one of the Neptunes best beats for fucks sake - and the whole 'Blackout' album in 2008 was based on dirty electro production, even with some rudimentary dubstep wobbles on one track as has already been gone over on this forum at huge length. She actually strikes me as a pretty fun character - completely mad, thoroughly dirty, with an earthy Southern sense of humour and decent taste in music. She's not Christina Aguilera in the singing stakes, but neither does she actually have a bad voice.
Having said that, the majority of this single is pretty iffy pop-trance of the kind that seems to rule US chart music at the moment, but the fact that it does have this dubstep style breakdown - which is pretty crunchy - is potentially a move forward and a demonstration that different rhythms can work in pop. And the more pop artists do this, the more likely you are to hear someone really interesting cop a hold of the sound and take it further.
But like I say, if you don't like pop music, FORGET IT. You can't fight it, pop will always adopt anything that it can, that's its nature - so instead of pissing in the wind making an overly-emo fuss about it, just concentrate on the music you DO love. Right? Right.

I must remember that one!joe muggs wrote:overly-emo fuss about it
Its a very fair point Joe makes, its pop music so of course anything popular like Dubstep will make it in! I personally dont have too much of a problem with it, 3/4's of the people (maybe even more) are not gonna go "Was that a Dubstep breakdown I just heard?" Most wont even know so really its just an artist taking some inspiration from another genre. I mean we all do that as producers even without knowing it!
Still I dont wanna see Brit & Skill b2b tho

Britney spears is god awful pop garbage...
Whether Rusko produces her beats or not makes no difference to me.
If anything it makes sense, shit "dubstep" under shit vocals.

Re: Rusko producing for Britney Spears!
i dont need to drop no long ass post about commercialism or what not.
all ima say
the only thing worse then a producer who is noisy, commercial, and after the cheques, is a producer who is all of the previously stated, and used to be underground.
when will people learn
"dubstep" is not a business,
"dubstep" is not producing for the masses
"dubstep" is music that makes sense, has a meaning, has some roots, some feel, some head bob, and some deepness
non waa waa cats screaming nonsense walkin round on mtv butt nekkid

this idea that, you have to serve the underground and can't do anything beyond it is ubsurd. if any of you were given the opportunity to work with britney or someone big on a worldwide level....none of you would turn it down, so lets stop preaching for a moment, and see it for what it is. part of being a producer is pushing your palette as far as it will go. does that mean that rusko should be making top 10 pop music? that's up to him. what you achieve by labeling someone as underground, means that you've walled in your concept of success, and defined it by sales and its ability to sell. some pop music is incredible on a production level alone.indy rai wrote: the only thing worse then a producer who is noisy, commercial, and after the cheques, is a producer who is all of the previously stated, and used to be underground.

Listen to Trevor Horn's work with Grace Jones and Frankie Goes To Hollywood.
Or George Martin's with The Beatles.
As you say, Quincy Jones.
Or Timbaland with Aaliyah and Missy Elliot.
The production on Queen, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Guns'n'Roses, Sade, Stevie Wonder, even The Sex Pistols.
The vastness of the sound on Lady Gaga 'Bad Romance' (you think I'm joking? Play that on a proper rig, instead of hearing it over the tannoy in a shop or whatever, it's an immense piece of craftsmanship)
Daft Punk
Norman Whitfield
Phil Spector
This work is art of the highest order, and has been an inspiration to untold underground artists too. The underground and the mainstream are NOT separate entities, but are intimately connected at all times. I'm not saying Rusko or Britney Spears will ever be as great as the people I mentioned - but don't slag off "commercialism" as a fundamentally bad principle if you don't know what you're talking about.

Re: Rusko producing for Britney Spears!
Ya know.........I can't help but say this. Theres been a lot of talk about what things should be and thats how they ALWAYS should be. If that where the case there would be no dubstep........and on a deeper level there'd not be much of anything in life. Almost every new idea is inspired by an old one. But mainly I want t address this underground/sell out thing that everyone seems to be clinging to so hard. It seems mildly ironic that IMO the ppl that are always braging about how underground they are, are the very ones responsible for drawing the attention to bring things main stream. These ppl are always talkin bout this "underground" shit and how cool they are for being a part of it, eventually someone that might be overhearing this conversation is bound get curious and check it out for themselves. (Rinse and repeat) I dunno it seems silly to me that ppl get so stressed out over this kinda shit. I don't get why ppl can't just ignore the things they don't like. Thats my rant........I'll shut up now.
