Sidechaining EH?

Post by blood_on_neon » Thu Apr 05, 2007 12:32 pm

I've never really done this as I just tend to pick a kick which doesn't interfere with the bass. How the fuck, though, do you do it with plugin compressors on, say, cubase? Arrgh I can't figure it out.
Cheers

Yeah sidechaining in cubase isn't very straight forward. You've gotta use a Quadro channel. This covers a couple ways, and forwards to a free compressor. There are also a few other ways of doing it. Just do some searches - you'll come up with something that works for you.

Hey I just actually got this issue sorted out myself. I can help you further if you have any questions.

Certainly goes A LONG WAY toward cleaning up a mix where kick and bass frequencies may collide.

For starters, I know SFA 'bout Cubase...
but one of these threads might help you out...
good freeware for sidechain compression
Sidechaining with Ableton

...or...
just look in the sticky production bible... I have a sneaky suspicion there'll be something hidden in there for ya...
:)

Good luck~Fuck-it-up!

It is a very longwinded way around things when you compare it to Logic but there's a couple of places that explain it well...

easiest way to side chain in cubase is to open vstdynamics and use this on every track with bass sound. thats how i was tought to do it. it doesnt actually say sidechain but thats what it does and with quality...

Huh? I don't think that side-chains anything. The output from one bass isn't being fed into the compressor of another.

Get a comp with sidechain inputs and make a quadro group. Make two sub groups - one stereo (L/R) channel and one other Stereo (Ls/Rs) subgroup. You send one to the Stereo Ls/Rs group and use route the signal you want compressed to the Stereo L/R group via insert.

Check out the tutorial above that I posted for a definate guide on how to do it and ask if you need some clarification.

it does work... if you have a heavy bassline an your drums are being drownd out then add vstdynamics and use soft clip.... now every time the kick hits the bass will compensate so you can hear both. is this not the perpose of side chaining??????????

I think you'd have to apply it over a group and have the element that you want to trigger the compressor very loud, so that the compressor would squash ie) your entire percussion track while the bass would be ~0db.

Applying a compressor to just the bass track and a compressor to just the kick track wouldn't cause the bass to be compressed when the kick kicked in - there must just be miscommunication here.

Deadly habit - what 'pressors are you using? There are a couple that natively support sidechaining in cubase, which definately make the process easier, but still require a quadro group. If there is another way I'd be interested (although this process is easy enough)

I'll do my best to produce a stereo side chaining tutorial

try the sidekick, it's a simple and free vst plugin to use on two channels: http://www.twistedlemon.nl/

i still use cubase 5 though, dunno if it works in sx...

BUT: watch out with sidechaining a weighty b-line if you want your music to be played on a system. personally i don't.

Here is my sidechaining example:

Figured a house track would be the best place to try this. Compressed the delay on the vox with the original signal, so that the delay plays out after the vox stop, but are compressed during vox. Also bass is compressed with the kick. Gives a nice cleanly quality I think.
