Sharmaji wrote:a gig like that is just a job-- so do your job and make the client happy. Who knows? might lead to more work. A couple of wedding DJ's i know each pull about $1500/gig-- and can fit 3 into a weekend. That leaves you Monday-Friday to make music for you, and 12 hours over the weekend to simply play music that makes other folks happy. Not a bad split.
Exactly this.
The client was clear about what they wanted and you took the gig, so it seems like a no-brainer. Play what they want to hear... *maybe* stretch the bounds a bit, but tread lightly and really read the crowd carefully. This is not one of those moments where it is your job to open their minds or whatever.
@Sharmaji - I think we know some of the same wedding dj's. And if they are who I think they are - they are some of the best dj's in ANY genre. They have crates deeper than the ocean and they make good fees (and are booked solid) because it doesn't matter who hires them, they can put on the best show for anyone's taste in music.
Personally I don't see what is so bad about getting paid to play some records you don't necessarily like. If it really makes you feel that dirty, don't accept anymore gigs. If you realize that it sure as hell beats working an office/store/fill-in-whatever job for the same amount of hours, then do a damn good job and tried to get hired for some more.

Re: I Sold My Soul.. How Can I Get Something Out of It?
you could do what I used to do which is play weird shit (which back then was deadmau5, back when he wasn't mainstream) until I got requests for Soulja Boy etc, play all the requests, and then when the requests eventually die down go back to weird shit
of course I didn't get paid and nobody instructed me to play top 40 so i wouldn't do that in your situation

I'd play classics and deep house.

for a medical conference, i'd have on hand all the buddha bar & theivery corporation stuff for "early warm"
then either classic american oldies, current top40, some throwback late 80s/early 90s jams, etc, etc.
@MadEP-- i was actually thinking of guys on the Indian Wedding circuit, but yeah-- top-flight wedding dj's are some of the best in the biz. At that point, it's a craft, not an art-- and they're master craftsmen. don't think i've ever heard them come anywhere close to a trainwreck in a mix... certainly not the case in our little corner of the world.
Your job isn't necesarrily to play music-- it's to make the client happy. do what it takes, and get your $.

Just play what you're getting paid to play.. Don't be a dick about it...
You're not going to get a office job and then spend half of your time making mini carpentry furniture are you?
You signed up to it, you reap the consequence's (and the pluses, as you said, its flight, hotel and stuff, thats pretty wicked!)

A Millie Excision & DatsiK remix - not too crazy and I know that mainstream hip-hop fans think it's gnarly.

Re: I Sold My Soul.. How Can I Get Something Out of It?
Hate to bump this up, but I was gone for the weekend and just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the advice! I feel like way less of a sell out after reading some of the comments. If I just think of it as a job and not as my artistic self I'll be good to go I think!
