Fasting and other strange health experiments

Post by misk » Mon Apr 09, 2007 4:11 am

anyone ever fasted? What kinda strange health things have you ever done, or been into? any enemas? :6:

I ask because im going to fast this week. gonna do a water/greens fast and im thinking of using the psyllium husk in the beginning to curb the hunger pangs.

suppose its more for spiritual reasons than anything else... but losing weight would be good too!

discuss this crazyness...

I've done that master cleanse diet where you mix lemon juice, water, and grade b maple syrup.. was pretty good actually. i wasn't hungry or anything. i only lasted for about 7 days though. it would have been better if someone was doing it with me. it was real hard when i was drinking lemonade and my fam was eatin' fried chicken :/

never tried, but i got friends that swear by the master cleanse.
fasting in the sense of just drinking water probably is unhealthy, esp. for prolonged periods of time...but if done right, i can see it as a means of cleansing (not weight loss-that takes lifestyle change). ive gone a couple days without eating before, and think i reached a moment of clarity or two. big picture definitely comes into focus.

now enemas?! dont make sense and seem really unhealthy

i generally dont fuck with my diet. its kidna sacred. although last year i tried a liquid diet, did it for about 2 very sad, long weeks, lost very little weight and said fuck it.

good luck, its always easier to do when you have support from others around you.

I wouldn't advise doing that for longer than you did, you'd become vitamin and protein deficient. Also there's lower glycemic sweeteners than maple syrup - fructo-oligo-saccharides for example, or even stevia which is herbal - which would keep your blood sugar more stable in an extremely hypocaloric environment such as a fast.

I can see the point in "cleansing" for health if you generally eat processed, artificially flavored, chemical-laden food, but it's a temporary fix. Whole foods and staying "clean" is a lifestyle change.

i did about a week of fasting followed by a week of juicing.... dont do it if you got a test or a marathon to run... you'll be pretty low energy, but theres lots of good reasons to cleanse, even if you stick to healthy foods year round

well like i said, its more for spiritual reasons than anything. Im already rather into meditation, and i find that its easier to focus on a state of no-mind (like an asana) if my body isnt busy trying to process food. and i dont have much to do this week, so im down for suffering through the hunger, weakness and the headaches. though those only last a few days, then i find that the digestive system sort of shuts down and i get an overwhelming feeling of clarity.

i feel like the only sober person at a party :D

i hear you all regarding lifestyle change. its not like i dont have a donut every now and then. Though my lifestyle is relatively healthy... my roommate and i grow greens (different kinds of kale, spinach, collard greens, mustard greens, and cabbage) and i tend to eat them a lot.

i dunno, sometimes i just feel like, if i listen to my body, it tells me what it wants, and right now it needs this.

you tend to not lose too much weight, as your body kinda freaks out and clings on to the fat you have, as it "thinks" its not going to get anything, so it needs to conserve energy.

When I was younger, my grandmother used to make us fast for 4 days, two times per year. She'd make some syrup based from maple syrup and that's all we'd have besides water. It wasn't for weight loss but for cleansing the system. I don't do it now, but I should! Apparently it gets lots of the toxins in your body out which otherwise would just be festering.

The legend that is Gianfranco Zola said he and his father both owe'd their fitness in their older years to a lifetime of fasting once a week. a nice random fact for ya

I'd like to give fasting a try. I went vege as a health experiment just last year and I'm already feeling a lot better than I did.

Greeks usualy fast around easter time but by fasting i mean the exclusion of food groups throughout the duration ie we go vegan, so no dairy products what so eva, not even an added ingrediant, but we can still eat throughout the day. Its basicly a simulation of the 40 days jesus spent in the desert.

Not bein able to have milk n such does suck at times, but you do find urself eating healthy and feeling it too, sayin that i love meat, milk and eggs - so its cool for a while but i wouldn't make a permanent switch.

Not strictly related, but I do remember caning so much skunk to myself the other week that I ate nothing but 2 bits of toast in a 24 hour period, whilst wondering why I kept feeling faint and disorientated.

Must say any physical or spiritual aspect was lost to wandering into rooms and forgetting why I was there. Might be kinda zen to some, although I somehow doubt it.
Hmm....
