how do i record variations in my wobble

Post by HomeNoiseRecord » Sun Jan 16, 2011 6:14 pm

somehting iv been ponering about for a while now. Im ok programming my MIDI and VST's, piano rolls and using samples, but how would i go about changing for example the resonance on a VST track while it is playing, rather than having one set parameter for the entire part?

I just came across this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiiVWknF_8s

the sounds this guy creates are what i would like to acheive, but it looks like he has a chaos pad or somethihgn similar to control all parts. My DAW is Cubase, and my hardware is limited. I use mainly Seismik, Subsonic, a yamaha keybaord (not a midi controller) and my USB soundcard.

Would i be able to press record and alter the knobs while the MIDI is copied to an audio track and edit the sound "live"? Or is there some kind of setting i am unaware of which can change the EQ's at certain pre determined places on the timeline?

automation is what your after, or like you said you can record it in live if you have some sort of controller hooked up.

I didn't check the video but what you're talking about is referred to as 'Automation' and it's a massive part of electronic music.

Midi tracks can be assigned purely to automation. This can be either recording the changes you make as the notes are played (like resonance, cut off or envelopes on synths for instance) or it can be drawn in on the midi automation track.

Whatever DAW/sequencer you are using, simply enter that name followed by automation into youtube / google and you'll have plenty of examples of how to do it. Do this before you do anything else. The 'help' section on the programme itself will almost definitely have details of how to do this.

A lot of people will duplicate thier synth channel make a bunch of variations to the sound as well.
Also consider resampling so you can chop/re-arrange shit.

Abelton has a global record option where you can automate as you record, don't know about other DAWs though.

In NI Massive, you can link lfo 6 on the lfo 5 rate parameter. select the stepper or performer in lfo6 and stetch the lfo5 rate parameter up or down.
Now your ready to automate your base lfo rate inside your synthesizer by modeling your lfo6. When using the stepper in lfo6 you can hold Alt to select a rounded level like 1 or 2.

I like this way more, because you can record your synthesizer with the automation already inside it.
To get some variations, you can later on add some external automation on the lfo parameters.

Peace
