Post by brew24 » Wed Jan 26, 2011 2:52 pm

Hey guy, got a problem and would really appreciate some help...
i've just bought a pair of Yamaha HS50 active monitors for my music production, and and clueless as to how to get them hooked up to my computer so i can make beats??? I've been searching google for like 2 days and theres no clear answer. The input part on the speakers is xlr so what cables will i be needing and will i be needing a soundcard or something???

don't need soundcard to hook em up, but it's recommended tho. Just get stereo 3.5mm to 2x XLR, assuming your build in pc soundcard has a 3.5mm output.

if you get a stereo 3.5mm then the speakers will be L en R, and panning can be done in your daw

I guess nobody noticed that these monitors have 1/4 inch inputs also, at least according to the pictures of the back of the unit on sweetwater.com.

I would use a 1/8mini jack (Male) to two 1/4inch T/S jacks (Male). Your local guitar shack has such things.

Are you sure you can just go from 1/8 mini to TRS like that? I'd assume that XLR input is expecting a balanced signal, and thats why they've included a 1/4inch input as well. Grounding issues since that XLR input has a ground pin, but 1/8mini jack doesn't? Have u done this before, project?

no i have not, havent even looked if the speakers also had 1/4. I've never used xlr. Before I bought my soundcard i've used 3.5mm to 2x TRS and it worked fine.

btw 1/4inch input is also balaced (atleast on mine monitors), if you use TRS that is

Right, and usually theres internal switching inside the jack, or sometimes outside the jack in the case of my Delta 1010, that switches from balanced to unbalanced in the case of 1/4" inputs.

Definitely go with the 1/4 inch OP.

Well I wasn't trying to be disrespectful or anything m8, I just have doubts that its going to work going from 1/8inch to XLR like that. I don't know everything either, so it might. But I still recommend 1/4inch, its cheaper for starters.

No offence taken. Yeah it's definitely cheaper, but the op did not state his also had 1/4inch inputs, otherwise I would have recommended those over xlr.

fwiw, a stereo 1/8th jack to two mono xlr/jacks wont be balanced, no matter what it says on the monitors.

get a soundcard with balanced outputs and nicer convertors than your standard headphone jack.
