Womps or wobbles? Wobbles or womps? :D

Post by jaydot » Sat Jan 29, 2011 12:34 pm

I've started to look at basses/basslines and bassline writing more in ,my tracks of late.

MO there are two distinct dusbtep bass sounds. You have the classic "womp" sound, usually repeated over and over like Rusko-Cockney Thug, for example. womp, wub, call it what you will.

Then the classic "wobble", controlled typically by your filter cutoff knob on your synth. *insert brostep track here, take your pick*

Which do you prefer?

I'm starting to use more and more womps. I know it's more suited to 4x4 bassline in many respects... but it can work in dubstep.

Anyone think of any examples where womps are used to good effect?

cockney thug is the only example I can think of this early in the morning, that isn't bitcrushed and distorted haha. I prefer wobbles personally. Cant go wrong with shit like Tunnidge, Benga and Cockney Violin, to use another Caspa example :)

edit: whaaa..? this whole time I thought Cockney Thug was by Caspa D:

Womps all day. I honestly can't remember the last time i used a proper LFO to cutoff wobble in one of my tracks. You'd probably think that Rupture is, but it's just a note i bounced out of massive into the EXS24 sampler, and then pulled back on the attack and release a tad so it feels like it's 'wobbling'.

Soundcloud

Always how i prefer to work, if you can get the 'wub' sounding nice on it's own you don't need to mess about with automating the LFO, bouncing out different rates etc. Just gotta shorten or lengthen the midi note, and drag it about until the rhythm sounds good. I don't think i'd have been able to get that bouncy rhythm through automating the LFO.

Yeah that's the beauty of wubs you can make write the bassline in the piano roll whereas if you automate the LFO/filter cut off you have to mess around for ages and still not get it sounding right.

I'm a womper. I prefer wub. I made a sample pack of generic wubs for sharing. It's got... 3, 4 hundred different wubs. But they're all 32 bit. I need an audio editor that can batch convert 32 down to 24 and 16 bits. I know adobe audition can do it, anybody know of any others?

Hm
So this 'womp' sound is just a basssound (with a slow attack?) drawed on the piano roll?
It's not Lfo automated?

Hm, any tips how to make that basssound? (ASDR? automation? ...?)
