Easy Spamzilla. That's not the point.

Soul has nothing to do with Dubstep but how many of us use the Amen Break in out tracks?
;)

Just allow the guy, he's not asking for bass is he? :corndance:

i beg to differ

for example one could argue that dubstep takes its roots in late 90's-early 2000's UK garage and broken beat, both genre have a lot of "soul" influence, like vocals, organs and whatnot

lots of dubstep also takes inspirations from RNB (purple sound much ?). What does R'n'B means again ? oh yeah "rhythm and blues" (note that before RNB meant cheesy MTV-like pop music, it refered to the blues black immigrants brought from the south to chicago and which largely helped spawn "soul")

you disagree and say "nah dubstep aint about cheesy synthlines and female vocals its about mad bass on a massive soundsystem"? ...ok point taken, lets go down this road, the whole sound system culture comes from jamaica's music scene, i think we can all agree that (even though its a bit of a stretch), it is a fact that rocksteady/ska/reggae were developed as jamaican local bands were trying to emulate the sound they heard on soul/rnb 7" that jamaican immigrants brought back from USA... so yeah i think dubstep kinda have something to do with soul

on the other hand, what links screamo to dubstep ? not much, except for a bunch of misguided kids who think having sierra leone as cellphone ringtone is being an audiophile

i rest my case your honor, but please feel free to discuss

You forgot hiphop's major influence on grime, garage, and later dubstep.. what is hiphop other then bambaataa going a little elaborate with a funk, soul, and jazz set?

And der, Skrillex cashed in on dubstep = dubstep is the new skreamo metal dude. Thats how its related. To hell with its past.

I'd put them in the metalcore/post hardcore slot to be fair, but each to their own.

Cool cool man, I like what you're saying. :4:

I'm not trying to find a link between Dubstep & Screamo because there probably isn't one, I just think we should be happy to take influences and characteristics from other genres to further our music, regardless of the genre. :)

I mean, you could say all music from the US except Classical originate from the slave trade and the African's call and response acapella stuff. because essentially one thing lead to another and that's what came first!

To summarise I think all genres have characteristics and traits that have been taken from other genres.. the aren't many [if any] genres I can think of that have taken no influences and are 100% original... which I think is fine, because that's how music works. :)

The fact that this guy is trying to take a characteristic from a genre as far away from Dubstep as Screamo is something that I think is quite admirable, so for that reason I was trying to help.

But yeah, it's all love man and I agree with the points you raised. :e:

Puzzled by some of the responses in here tbh....

Fucking hate all that screaming shit but everyone always moans when someone asks how to make a sound like flavouroftheweek and people go sick saying be unique/dont follow the heard/do something different. someone comes on here asking for help trying something different and gets a load of bollocks answers.

sweet.

The thing is, this is the flavor of the week, if you havent noticed... death metal/screamo step...

Someone (Skrillex) does something "unique" (lmfao), and screams over some midrange, and now, this guys aimin along the same goal...

Definition flavouroftheweek how to do something.

come on mate, this is a bullshit argument. dubstep has got no more to do with soul than it has to do with screamo. just because uk garage had some organ sounds and vocals and people like to call it 'soulful' (ugh, about as soulful as a fucking carrot) but if you ever actually listen to soul music you will see there is virtually no correlation.

rnb doesnt mean 'rhythm and blues', and hasnt for probably over 20 years. it means 'rhythm n bass' now and again has barely anything in common with proper soul/r&b.

and in fact dubstep barely has anything to do with dub anymore, other than the fact that it has loads of bass and that it gets played on sound systems.

i mean sure all music influences other music, so there are gonna be some indirect influences from soul, dub etc. but then theres also gonna be indirect influences from aggy emo nonsense, especially these days with all this metally bruvstep stuff or whatever. so you cant deny its there. you dont have to like it though (hell, i dont - emo can fuck off as far as im concerned).

I would say dubstep still has a lot of influence form dub. It is mostly just drums and bass. Striped back rhythms. Striped back sounds to focus on the bass and drums. Still like that today.

oh really ? :m:

nah but i get what you're saying, of course dubstep isnt soul, neither is mtv mass produced rnb, i was just saying historically these genres branch out from the same root, aiming at the statement that soul has no more to do with dubstep than screamo which imo is incorrect

but actually i think this once again raises the question of what is dubstep, is fantastic mr fox dubstep ? is skrillex dubstep ? is MJ's "Beat It" dubstep ? no ? well its roughly 140 BPM and it has a bassline so it meets the criteria though

discuss

Well regardless of whether dubstep takes influences from Soul or Dub...

Dubstep is a seperate genre and will move in whatever way us producers wish to take it.
We as producers get to decide what we make and if one of us wants to bridge the gap between Dubstep & Screamo then fair play to them... not everyone's gunna like it but it's more creative then just putting together a track that stays well within the boundries of Dubstep.

So essentially, big up for trying something a little different! :t:

I refuse to call this 'different' when Skrillex is headliner of the week, and this is his thing. Im not a fan of him, but like I said, I can admit noone had done that before he ame along, scream over midrange, so yeah... but now, here's one of your copy cats. So yeah, o.p. doesnt get the 'different' cred.
