Mystikal Roots is the brand new London based label fusing elements of Reggae & Dub whilst retaining the melodic conventions of Dubstep.
This young and fresh label who are dedicated to providing a change to the dubstep genre merging elements from Reggae & Dub and implementing them into full on bass heavy songs.
Disillusioned by the current underground music scene, which churns out disposable ‘tracks’ composed for the sole purpose of being incorporated into a mix and not songs with longevity and an individual depth, something Mystikal Roots hope to achieve throughout their releases.
This second release from the Mystikal Roots label – ‘Don’t Smoke The Dub EP’ by Skinshape- brings together a rare mix of Psychedelic dub whilst subtly including some elements of dubstep.
Mystikal Roots are aiming to branch out into a more open and diverse market as one cannot really classify or define the sounds that are present on this release. Skinshape’s influences range from King Tubby to Jefferson Airplane to Cinematic Orchestra. Elements of these can be found throughout the release.
What drew us into Skinshape and his music was the un-denying fact that his music is breaking boundaries and creating music that is unconformist in the modern sense that he is experimenting with sounds and techniques that aren’t being made in today’s dub scene. Though his music might sound modern, he is essentially going back to the roots of when dub was in its early elements, the music you hear from him is recorded live with instruments and mixed and engineered by him, just the way it used to be…
The collaboration with the beautifully talented Anina Trobec whom features on ‘Surfer Dub’, came about as they are both studying music technology at Goldsmiths University (London). Whilst they both share a passion for dub music, each of them brings together their own interpretation of the sound, which I would say mixes very well together. Anina is open to experimenting with her voice and does not stick with one genre of music which you can find with her other releases.
We here at Mystikal Roots think we have created a remarkable EP which will be an essential purchase for anyone who is a fan of organic and REAL music.
