Leicester's scene

Post by Dezbeatz92 » Mon Jan 31, 2011 3:38 pm

Hi all leicester peeps and everyone else!

I personally believe that 'lesta's' scene is in need of a real push, some of the events we have held have had little turn out in prime student partying time and with big names aswell there is many reasons like ultimately a badly run night/little advertising etc etc but i can assure people in reference to my own nights there hasnt been enough of a turn out over 5 events for anyone to come to the conclusion we do not run good nights, obviously you cant just magic peeps to come along and you cannot force dubstep upon people they are going to need to want to listen..

so im just hoping any lesta heads can help spread the dub word! the likes of felis and others are doing alot for the scene here and im sure its appreciated by many but it cant stop there and the poor guys cant do it alone!
im going to start a bi-monthly night as the profits are not high enough to run them more often and it is going to be dubstep in all forms with alot of experimental music like futuristic hip-hop. We are going to be working closely with some good friends who run a hip hop night called Konductors lab to get the best of the best futuristic hip-hop and i hopefully will be able to get in touch with some old contacts to bring in the dubstep giants and i will be seeking some grime DJ's with a dubsteppy feel to it, along with this night, we are going to set up an internet radio station to get some local DJ's mixes and new talent tracks out there which is always fun (more details will pop up over feb in the events page for details of nights, in the production page any leicester/neighbouring cities i would like you guys to get in touch see what we are about and hopefully get you pushing your sounds over the net.)

if anybody feels the same way please help us push the scene forward here in leicester, the scene for me imo mostly consists of the jumpy/hypy/wobble side of dubstep and thats a very good start to none at all! but we need more of a bass culture here and i will hopefully be triumphant!

Big up to the dubstep heads! Music makes the world go round. :w:

There was a sick monthly night in leicester back in 07 or 08, exodus it was, had Caspa, Rusko, Plastician, Kromestar, Quest and a few other big named djs there. There was only 3 nights they did i think, it was at squares in town, was a sick night

Also Kontakt used to do pretty big nights aswell but they stopped now, which is a shame.

Felis has quietened them down since starting the big dub nights with Lee Perry/David Rodigan etc but I think there's one at the end of march with Quest, Silkie & Kromestar which should be good.

I'm doing another Migration night on feb 26th (10-6) with me, Ruckspin, Bar9, Subject 13, John Maveric, Melly, Edit Smith & Zurcon @ Canvas near St Martins Square (formerly 39 steps). There will be some mixed sets but music will be mainly dubstep of all styles with a bit of experimental 4-4 here and there + DNB later on - starting things very chilled but tunes will get progressively more lively as the night goes on

i fully support the leecester dubstep scene, recently opened a new record shop in leicester stocking new and second hand dubstep on vinyl, i have also been involved with promoting dubstep nights in leicester aswell as having dubstep cross over artists at my long running dnb night Genetic with people like shy fx, breakage, crissy criss all crossing over

i also ran a night called dubway for around a year, we had caspa, sukh knight, hatcha, bar 9, rob sparx, amongts others and never pulled in any more than 100 or so and all nigths were promoted well or as best a promoter can promote in a stupidly restricted city of ours (flyer ban, poster prosecution etc), i dont say this to be negative but its simple in my eyes, theres simply not enough people into it who go out to dubstep nights in leicester, kontact is no more, dubway is no more, exodus is no more beacuse all only ever really attracted a 100 or so people which is not enough to break even specially now with the stupid price increases, i wont go on lol, thats my pennies worth anyway!

Yeah Its a real shame about the state of leicester outlook on dubstep and the mass just arnt interested but the thing that annoys me people tell me all the time about there mates from leicester being here being there! show some local support ha!
were prep'ed for whatever outcome and it isnt only dubstep focused so we'll see how we go..
we have some big support behind us and some big minds behind the movement we hope to get undergo, and the city does have some pretty annoying restrictions but rules are made to be broken.. respected but ya get the picture!

we are ready in terms of all the kit, promotion/flyer manufacturing, agent/dj relations, venues etc etc we are just waiting for daddy co-ordinator to move down from leeds and i finish my day contract here and will be going onto a very manage-able shift pattern.. long and short this is my new project to get me through the weeks out of hours! wish me luck i mean iv got my work cut out for me! Any support or anyone can pop down to the first night, seeing you all there would be great!

@rob sparx Good night lined up then! ill pop by and see show my face by nice to meet a few of you again!

I also hope the likes of felis carry on there efforts even if only in dub, Leicester needs a kick up the arse.

Cheers

Ppl here aint interested in hearing "real" dubstep all night long but that doesn't mean audiences won't appreciate good music just in small doses, Leicester is no different from the rest of the world in that respect. Dub music is pretty popular up here anyway

yeah its pretty popular but its not got the audience it deserves, im hoping through the diversity of the styles that will play at our nights and the different genres should help keep some people interested that dont appreciate just one sound all night, i want to bring all 'music' enthusiasts and show them the forms of dubstep available to them and give alot of local talent a chance to get their work out there, generally im just in it for just that and the thrill of it all and its the same for the other guys on this!

Well i cant say im not hopeful but i know it will take alot of time and expenses to draw the turn outs i require and i really want the auditorium -q- but ill see how it goes look out for upcoming events in the 'midlands events' thread.

Cheers

My mate had Joy Orbison play back in October at Sophbecks on a house night (CityFly) which was one of the best night ive had in Leics.

We need promoters bringing in the likes of Pangaea, Hyetal, Pev, 2562, Untold, Roska, Brackles etc. showcasing wide variety of DJ's/musical alongside the regulars like Skream, Sukh Knight and Benga.

Big up Felis, miss the old Kontakt nights at the Music Cafe and Shed!

I am going to be getting plenty of artists playing the less hyped/more musical side of the scene although (other than names ive already mentioned for the next event) more along the lines of Phalaeh, DFRNT, Von D, DJ Madd, Radikal Guru, Matt U, Synkro & Indigo etc

I grew up in leicester and it formed my love for the step. Exodus was awesome, didn't they get hatcha one of my earliest dubstep memories is hatcha and listening to sparks obviously.

There is a huge underground music scene in leicester and, as Rob mentioned, Felis now regularly plays host to the mighty vibronix, Jah tubby's, Abba Shanti I and a multitude of other bassweight talents.

Don't be dissapointed by the scene over there feel lucky that, for such a small, understated city, the scene is thriving and great music is comming out of there.

I was at Leicester Uni for three years, only really got into dubstep mid-2009, and when i started looking around for nights, had a bit of trouble, to be honest. Made it to a couple of the dubways, and ventured down to Sophbeck quite a bit. Now I'm down in Brighton, I'm spoilt for choice! I agree with what someone said above about promoters not being able to promote well enough, there was only presence from Liquid or fucking Zanzibar on campus, and that student market is a mighty big one

hmmm, didnt FWD>> start of with less than 100 people....

why do you need big names? it seemed there was a pretty big list of people who are dj/producers in the city.... why not cut the costs down not book big boys and make it a word of mouth thing..... like the old blueprint vibe in Nottz, you didnt need to know who was playing there, just that they had a night on.... also think about Subdub in Leeds, it wasnt about who was playing it was about the night itself....you know, nice liberal club where you can do some smokin' build the vibe up.... going out for me is not about seing specific people (they are always a let down - horsepower at stealth the other week for example) it is about hearing good music....i dont care if it is untold or Shaggy McGoo playing anaconda, i just wanna hear the tune!

anyway, we are in Nottz, so can help you if you need....

see them big dub nights being advertised down my ends all the the time.....
