deep or just boring?
so many talk about deep tunes and produce deep tunes.
what i often miss is the real deepness to it.
sure, it often has a quite complex rythm - but where's the groove?
sure, it has a sub - but where just a sinewave on C1 doesn't make a tune deep.
sure, it doesn't have these horrible wobbles. but instead some limp extremly uninspired piano chord.
where's the haunting feel to it? where is that 'something' that captures?
i'm all for a sine sub - but don't make things sooooo easy! put some effort in making the sub fit into the track as a whole. by making it sticking to the groove would be my suggestion.
just my 2pence.
i'm off to bed.

cant agree because this goes for some artists and then not others

this is of course not to be seen generally!bum robot wrote:cant agree because this goes for some artists and then not others
there is a shitload of damn good tunes out there!
but on the other hand i'm seeing some loss of quality the more people turn to the deepside of bass music...

one thing i could say is its almost hard to get some real emotion or atleast keep it in a track that is a real banger and in the deeper tracks its there for you to translate in anyway, thats my own opinion and i know i have alot of favroite songs that are bangers with some real deep emotion in them but its just not that nice chilled out zone the deeper tunes put you in.

Its not even about emotion, really... or anything like that. Its about putting enough work into music so when you listen to it, it feels like the artist has crafted the track perfectly, like bringing up a child...
I guess a lot of people do rush their music these days as the scene moves so fast people think they're going to miss their shot if they spend a month making a track.

i'm with you legend4ry. you're probably right.
but on the other hand - i think it's very personal how long someone needs for a tune.
at least 2 days tho. if someone makes mixup right after producing the whole track i think it won't work out...
not with me at least. i need fresh ears for mixup

Re: deep or just boring?
This is true with anything, and just about any type of music, maybe except jam music, where it is all happening in real time...
Which leads me to the point that A LOT of the music I'm hearing, bro or deep (as if these were the only two poles), sounds really produced. YAWN. Boring. Get some ambition, take some fucking risks. Do something that isn't right. Being born is extremely traumatic, just about as traumatic as it gets, but f'ing hell it leads to new life. Get out of your genre womb, and your skillful production, and DO SOMETHING!

But to your point vulva, yeah, honestly I think there is more danger in deep than in other, say, more energetic forms of music. Minimalism always looks so easy, but it is always way harder than maximalism. There is no place to hide, you're just a naked skeleton standing in the breeze.

Re: deep or just boring?
I've been saying this for ages. It's just as bad as the whole brostep for rinsed sounding emotionless paint-by-numbers dubstep. I think people raving about how their own tunes are so deep, meditative, chilled (and so on) is just as annoying and pretentious as all the "filthy/epic/wubwubwub" stuff. I think some producers see it that by making "deep" stuff they're above all the brostep crew already.
There, enjoy all that negativity.
I think if production/craft is the judge of whether music is good there's something really wrong.

Re: deep or just boring?
during my radio show last weekend, I was playing TKR - Polar during my radio show last Saturday and someone popped in the chat and said...
"this isn't deep, this is just boring"
my response was "no one is forcing you to listen"

Re: deep or just boring?
It's a fine enough line that mood can often be the determinative factor.
But with all the avenues for distribution of music, yeah, if you don't like it, find any one of the ten trillion other channels.

Re: deep or just boring?
....'deep' music (terrible name for it) i dont care how technical/original it is if it conveys spirit and emotions, moves you or takes you on a pleasing evocative journey of soundscapes... 'brostep' (awful name) is the same. If you have some amazing technical glitchy shit to show off but it sound like it was written by articificial intelligence... then have fun with that, if you can combine both and create a nice composition then your juggling both halves of the brain well... but i know which half of mine is stronger and how it effects my taste/expression...
never underestimate good melody, funk, organic samples of real instruments/vocals and our ability to capture real reverb/depth/space (barely anyone seems to bother trying!) step outside of the 011010011's from time to time... and there's no reason why all this cant be used in combination with hard hitting funky technical drum and sub rythyms and diverse orginal distorted bass...

if its good its not boring
no doubt theres something "less good" in every genre and category there is..
but i hate the term "deep" dubstep. its just dubstep.

Re: deep or just boring?
leave the classifying for people who do that shit
make what comes natural when you sit down in front of your DAW
most boring tunes regardless of style come about when someone sits down and says well i'm gonna make a xyz style tune and constrain themselves

Re: deep or just boring?
I always thought 'deep' was just a way of saying 'anything that isn't brostep' and refers to the fact that they have actual BASS for the basslines rather than midrange yoiyoiwahwahbleughelgue. Rather than deep as in meaningful and pretentious.
Also, a lot of new peple here seem to think when we use the term we are referring to a set in stone sub-genre or some bullshit like that. It's just a way of saying 'not brostep' quickly on these forums. It's not a genre or a sub genre or anything silly like that.

Re: deep or just boring?
^ Indeed.
Deep to me, is anything what has a low sub bass.. even if it has WAWHWHAHWHAHWAH in it..

Re: deep or just boring?
I call music that I find emotional 'deep'. If it touches me then its deep in my eyes tbh. If I can ignore a track in anyway or want to turn it off then its boring to me:)
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
