Re: deep or just boring?
Problem is people have to have a whole shit load of one thing. I don't know why. Variety is the spice of life. I have gone off the deep end myself. Dj wise anyway but I stick to my roots production wise. I have a lot of deep elements but maintain a bit of dirt in the baselines. Eventually we are going to realize it doesn't have to be one of the extremes.
Re: deep or just boring?
don't make this thread about subgenres.
as i don't care about how ''wawawowowowo'' music evolves because i just don't listen really to it i'm just refering to the ''other'' sound. it's just a way of describing the sound - not taging it.
@kHoff: i don't think that variety is the (only) key. a track can even have too much of it imho.
minimalism lives from changes you don't even realise - but somehow the sound IS changing... listen to dubtechno from the echochord stacks for full comprehension.

That doesn't make any sense as a response.kHoff wrote:its called varietytherapist wrote: I think people raving about how their own tunes are so deep, meditative, chilled (and so on) is just as annoying and pretentious as all the "filthy/epic/wubwubwub" stuff. I think some producers see it that by making "deep" stuff they're above all the brostep crew already.
Re: deep or just boring?
idk... to me the "deep" stuff has a tendency to be just as bad/generic as "filthy" stuff. it's mostly some shit that sounds like trance or if you're lucky liquid dnb, has the same lack of rhythm and it all sounds the same. chick singing, some chords = instant OMG ITS SO BEAUTIFUL AND DEEP.

I don't hear nothing but sludgey goodness in this bare deep track.hasezwei wrote:idk... to me the "deep" stuff has a tendency to be just as bad/generic as "filthy" stuff. it's mostly some shit that sounds like trance or if you're lucky liquid dnb, has the same lack of rhythm and it all sounds the same. chick singing, some chords = instant OMG ITS SO BEAUTIFUL AND DEEP.

I agree with "bum robot"
There are a lot of people who hate brostep, but really, don't do anything special with their tunes in terms of melodic content.
IMO, deep dubstep is supposed to be something emotional, not necessarily sad, or happy, but something that will relate to your feelings. I think the emotion is key because in a style which is supposed to be more minimalistic, you've got to work with more than sound to make a track good.
That's something I think every producer should aim for, regardless of the genre or subgenre, the emotion of the track, how a listener would "feel" it.
Again, my opinion on the subject, open to discussion...

< - actually matches up with the kick/snare if timed right.
to me that's "just" dubstep. i personally divide dubstep into 3 parts:
- the sound of someone puking into a bitcrusher (bro/filth)
- sterile trancy shit or cliché liquid pitched down to 140 bpm ("deep", "shit", "hurr durr i sampled a piano song and made some pads") bonus if you have a chick singing in another key than the bassline
- everything that doesn't fit into one of those categories i just call "dubstep that doesn't suck". that can be anything, from plastician or sukh knight to zomby or scuba or untold or vaccine or benga or kryptic minds or even rusko etc. it's not that i hate wobbles or actually deep tracks, i just hate the cliché those two poles have become.
damn i remember back in the day my friends used to say "this isn't dubstep!!" when i played them ramadanman's "offal" (biiiiiig tune) and now it's me saying "this isn't dubstep, this is fucking horrible shit" when they show me, well, anything they find on youtube.

Re: deep or just boring?
to me deep carries connotations of a level of detail and subtlety, fuck all to do with a sine wave sub and some chords. depth and aggression are not mutually exclusive either - its quite possible to be both.
however lots of people seem to refer to anything thats a bit mellow as 'deep', which imo isnt necessarily (generally) the case.

Re: deep or just boring?
sorry, i meant that when you are able to make both what people consider "deep" along with filthy stuff that are both appealing, (maybe not to everyone) then it shouldn't really matter. my seeing is that good producers dont always stick to one style.therapist wrote:That doesn't make any sense as a response.kHoff wrote:its called varietytherapist wrote: I think people raving about how their own tunes are so deep, meditative, chilled (and so on) is just as annoying and pretentious as all the "filthy/epic/wubwubwub" stuff. A mimimum of 90% of all creative media is rubbish.
Also, deep and filth are not diametrically opposed, I find a lot of Broken Note's stuff filthy and deep...
...but really trying to attatch abstract adjectives to subjective media is relatively pointless, given that everyones interpretation is different.

Can we get a poll for this thread?
Re: deep or just boring?
Yeah, well it appears that deep is not as well defined as brostep is perhaps.vulvavibration wrote:don't make this thread about subgenres.
I have been hearing a lot of New Agey dubstep lately though...
Re: deep or just boring?
From reading this I get the feeling you think alot like I do about this subject. It's the same thing that drove me from DNB. I didn't want potsnpans or liquid or drumfunk or jumpup or whatever I just wanted good dnb and I just felt like there was nothing left that wasn't pigeon holed. Same with dubstep now. Like I say I like deep but really the stuff I like is a bit heavier just not waahhh wahh wahhh crap. 6 years ago each known dubstep artist had their own unique take on it instead of everyone breaking off into clicks. I'm not going to cry about it though. Just keep on truckin' ya know. I have no plans of selling out with the filth just to make it on the Beatport chart. It's kinda silly. I think it will blow over eventually and the real heads can reclaim the genre. Still a lot of amazing stuff out there, it just gets buried.hasezwei wrote:legend4ry wrote:I don't hear nothing but sludgey goodness in this bare deep track.hasezwei wrote:idk... to me the "deep" stuff has a tendency to be just as bad/generic as "filthy" stuff. it's mostly some shit that sounds like trance or if you're lucky liquid dnb, has the same lack of rhythm and it all sounds the same. chick singing, some chords = instant OMG ITS SO BEAUTIFUL AND DEEP.

Re: deep or just boring?
heh, instead of complaining, you should have posted an example of a tune you didn't like so everyone can go crazy and start trolling each other. eh, me thinks the deep stuff is really hard to accomplish properly, which is why there isn't a lot of it out "there" (there being raves, parties, what not) anymore. oh btw, the sub isn't on c1 it's on g1, thank you very muchvulvavibration wrote:so many talk about deep tunes and produce deep tunes.
what i often miss is the real deepness to it.
sure, it often has a quite complex rythm - but where's the groove?
sure, it has a sub - but where just a sinewave on C1 doesn't make a tune deep.
sure, it doesn't have these horrible wobbles. but instead some limp extremly uninspired piano chord.
where's the haunting feel to it? where is that 'something' that captures?
i'm all for a sine sub - but don't make things sooooo easy! put some effort in making the sub fit into the track as a whole. by making it sticking to the groove would be my suggestion.
just my 2pence.
i'm off to bed.
