ok so um... dubstep's not musical at all, there's no reason why anyone would like it as it's utterly unenjoyable (IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A METER) so the only reason people like it must be some kind of sociological and/or mind control via sub bass aspect.

either that, or OP is a guy who never got further than 4/4 kickdrum "tek" in terms of rhythm (but totally gets autechre's rhythms i mean it's like math n shit rite?), hasn't listened to ANY proper dubstep and judges a whole genre based on the crap he's heard so far.

also i have been listening to dubstep for 2-3 years before i went to my first rave, which was absolutely horrible (dj's couldn't dj) even though they played decent tunes on a huge soundsystem. WHERE IS YOUR SCIENCE NOW?

OP was a substandard troll. A good troll could have kept this going for pages upon pages.

I think the power to play music in front of hundreds of people, enjoying the tunes you drop, dancing out of control, screaming, yelling, etc.. is a incredibly cool power and a blessing. There is a little magic involved indeed

a good DJ, producer, performer needs to know how to control the crowd to dance, the tunes are merely the palette the performer chooses to paint from.

now put your hands up! :h:

if you swap out the "mind control" aspect, and replace it with "crowd control"... that's one of the fundamentals of being a good DJ

"In December 2004 Nature reported that a group of Swedish researchers lead by Pehr Granqvist, a psychologist at Uppsala University in Sweden, had attempted to replicate Persinger's experiments under double-blind conditions, and were not able to reproduce the effect.[9] The study was published in Neuroscience Letters in 2005.[10] Granqvist et al concluded that the presence or absence of the magnetic field had no relationship with any religious or spiritual experience reported by the participants, but was predicted entirely by their suggestibility and personality traits."

People love it coz it's got interesting sounds which are great even at low levels,
and at high levels it's a very 'physical' experience because of the low frequency modulation.
You can therefore hitch a ride onto the musical experience instead of merely running parallel with it with softer styled music.
Stylistically It's also (usually) aggressive and gives one a sense of 'being cool/gangsta' which i think are related to the tempo/rhythms,
it seems to speak to males mostly, but the women are catching on now it's hitting the mainstream.

As far as mind control.
The control producers have with it so far is to make people dance, fight, mosh etc.

Unless the government starts producing dubstep, i dont think we have anything to worry about.

this is a trip.. the problem is you want to take nuero-science with a grain of salt in a way... i used to research this stuff all the time..Its great to know but you dont want to live by what you've read's standards..lol if that makes sense. Just try not to be too picky about what is music and what isnt.. if it makes noises its kinda music.. smell me? :ukking: I've never thought about dubstep this way and i appreciate you bringing this up to give us forum readers a new insight :w:

And I agree, we have to cut this guy some slack, it really is an interesting topic, maybe the way he proposed his "thesis" isn't the most logical or scientifically valid, but could prove to be a worthwhile experiment if executed by the right psychologist/scientist with the proper tools.

I think the closest I've come to being (or actually have been) mind-controlled was by Bassnectar when he played on Sunday night at Shambhala, on PK sound's 100 000W system at the Village...that shit reached up to 130db! :corntard: :r:

I'm definitely going to write my university paper on this too! Thanks all for the ideas :)

Just read the book, "This is your brain on music," by Daniel J. Levitin. I actually have two copies of it, and it's one hell of an interesting read if you get a chance to check it out. The author is a former recording engineer/producer who left to study neuroscience at McGill University, so this is probably right up your alley.

I read, sorry, that the custom designed PK stacks are capable of reaching up to 130db. And I believe that Bassnectar is the only DJ to ever have turned the "bass boost" on PK subs to full blast.

If you have ever been to a PK show, you know that such madness is easily reachable. The best part about it is that it's crystal clear, not the slightest distortion.
