the problem is when there is political shakeup the people don't always gain more control. These protests may be in the name of progress but could ultimately cause regression. The billions of dollars being lost and the damage done amongst political parties won't lead to progression. The intent is not always the result.noam wrote:^^^^
but the protests in Egypt seem clearly in aid of more progression, not regression
there's been no rhetorical spiel about western influence AT ALL. as a country a large part of their economy is tourist based. it is just speculation on my behalf but i'd guess they (as a whole) would want an increase in liberal, western influence. not the other way around.

I had the pleasure to meet and date some egyptian college students in my youth. I have to say their personal habits were beyond liberal. They left western sexual norms, in the dust.noam wrote:they (as a whole) would want an increase in liberal, western influence. not the other way around.

The US embassy in Cairo has denied the involvement of one of its diplomatic cars in the accident that led to the deaths of several protesters.
In a statement distributed to the media, the embassy said that non of the embassy’s cars or employees were involved in the accident.
The statement said that several of the cars that belonged to the embassy were stolen on January 28 and investigations revealed that the cars have been used in criminal and violent acts.
A video of a diplomatic car running over several protesters has been making the rounds on the internet for several days.

Re: the situation in egypt
I wouldn't be surprised if it was stolen. I doubt a fully trained diplomatic vehicle driver would just plow through a crowd like that. It didn't look like they were attacking the car. Just obstructing the way.
The US wouldn't admit to it if it was an American though.

it happened last week
In Afghanistan we had vehicles stolen all the time. Gotta imagine that the embassy has been fairly vacant for the past 2 weeks.

So who was driving the van?
Re: the situation in egypt
pro-mubarak supporters apparantly, they ran it into a crowd of anti-mubarak supporters.
Re: the situation in egypt
That was horrific.
Re: the situation in egypt
even though the muslim brotherhood has been preaching democracy up until now, it was because that's the talk that benefitted them in the repressive dictatorship that Egypt is, and I think it's not at all unreasonable to be wary of the possibility of them radicalizing when they get free rein and power in their hands. It's kind of naïve to predict that Egypt with a powerful Muslim Brotherhood will end up like Turkey (a democratic muslim country). Egypt is not Turkey, they don't have the secular constitution, tradition and military that Turkey has and it's not unreasonable to fear that it might end up less like Turkey and more like Iran.
