Video Game Samples youve found

Post by Fbac » Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:26 pm

Im assuming the majority of us know that if you have a pc game (at least the oldones) that in its folder were a bunch of audio files with which you could use in your music, i was wondering what youve found over the years and have thought to be cool.

The two that come to my mind are : Carmaggeddon ( a massive 3.71 mb if audio, bout 200 diffrent shouts screams car noises and cars hitting people/zombies)

and the original GTA , which only had about 6 audio files but they were the intro gansgsta speechs

So what have you enjoyed? i reckon the halflife series has some good audio folders

i was going to suggest swaps but i think that may break forum/ethichal rules

if anyone has a decent DL link to the half life sounds please post it, Im desperate to get it again but cant find it anywhere. Someone posted it not long ago but it was a painfully slow link, got to about '50 days remaining' and I just cancelled it.

just get the PC version and find the right folder i'd say. I never ripped any samples from games tho. I like to make them myself these days (in fact it's what I do for a living)
Well.. it really depends on the game, sound formats, compression used, etc.

You can just open files as RAW files in a lot of sound/sample editors. Problem is, you have to try different formats for the data:

-128 - signing on bits with 8-bit samples
-32768 signing on bits with 16-bit samples
stereo or mono samples??

and you've also gotta remember that the developers of games will often use compression tools that are either in-house or not that well known. (Unlike quake's "pk3" files a.k.a - "ZIP" files!!)

If you want to rip stuff from the majority of games you'll need to find data unpackers and all sorts. For some you'll get away with just finding the right file, reading it as raw and getting the data format correct. Some games, hell.. just grab the WAV files ;)

But the all-round answer is... it's not that easy with all games and often requires some games-ripping experience.

Another option (and probably a bit easier) is to try and find a sample ripper that will let you play memory-ranges as if they were samples, and extract them that way. - but i can't find many apps to do that.

Seems like a bit of an ordeal in some cases, no clue about DS(2)

Word on the sound design in deadspace, some seriously sick stuff there.

Morrowind had an easily accessible sound folder but most of the sounds were complete arse with maybe one or two lines of dialogue worth sampling. Sacrifice had some cool music/drones to sample (serious respect if you know sacrifice).

Half life has a special space in my heart sampling wise cos I was in this joke band with a couple of mates; we used to stick this mp3 player with a record function in the corner of the room and trigger samples from half life 1 through windows media player while playing really shit guitar stuff.

i remember old PS one games, when they were on CD and not DVD, you could load them into a HiFi and play the audio tracks, so if u have old games just try this and trip them to your computer. I know if defo worked with Tomb Raider.

One of my favorite computer games I've played, proper hard learning curve though. Charnel and Stratos are bare jokes.
