Post by black_one » Mon Feb 07, 2011 11:33 am

I'm pretty much new on the whole DJ scene, but i rly got addicted to dubstep fast and i'd like to try making something od my own :) What is a good place to start ? What equipment should i get ?

I'm kinda in the same boat man. I wanna start having a go, after beatmaking for a while now. I think the best thing to do is get some CDJs but I'm not fucking expert so I haven't a clue really.

Decide what medium you'd like to mix on first. Vinyl is more expensive to buy but the equipment is generally cheaper, digital the tracks are cheaper to buy and easier to store, but the equipment is generally more expensive.

Next, allocate a budget for how much you're willing to spend.

Look on ebay, i got my first setup of ebay for a 100 quid, i got like 2 turntables, amp, 2 technics speakers, a sub (propper nice) n a mixer,

to be fair the amp fucked up, didnt have any needles but apart from that it was well worth it.

and i have to agree its all about vinyl, but its more expensive to buy the tracks, but i just love the feel of vinyl, but everyones got their own opinions

Tech 1210s.
You can get a pair for around 300 quid if your lucky.

And if you decide unwisely not to get Techs then make sure you don't get belt-drive.

See I was hoping he got some repliesso I could threadjack lol
Im selling some cymbals and drum hardware and been looking into getting a direct drive vinyl set up. I should have £400 ish to play with but I could stretch that if it would be worth it. Obviously what you get is what you pay for. I nearly bought some stanton t62s the other day. 220 with a gemini mixer but Id not checked them out by the time they were sold.
Basically if anyone can point me towards a decent set. I know everyone has a different preference but Im just after something fairly solid that im not gonna have too many problems with. Nice 1 chaps

Go digital, it's the future. Check out DJ software (eg. Traktor, Serato, Virtual DJ, TORQ, Ableton live). You'll need a laptop to run it, and a midi controller. One of the problems with digital however is that you can potentially lose presence when compared to CDJs, so I'd recommend a big fuck of controller like Native Instruments S4, or M audio Xponent (I have 2 of these which I use duirng live sets, really amazing with the right mapping. Both second hand on ebay for around 250 quid)

ive got traktor scratch duo, but ive never been able to use it like, ive seen a couple of vids on youtube n it looks pretty responsive like, i think its pretty ideal really, its like the best of both worlds, touch of vinyl n ease of access of mp3. although i do really like the whole getting your paycheck, missionin into town to go to the record store n buying yourself some new vinyls. even though i'll be using traktor im still gonna support the scene n buy tracks i really want.

buy techs or proper pioneer CDJs imo.
That should be your barebone start point.
Then put serato on top.

I have one of these...

It's pretty sick, only £170 so not too expensive and pretty nice to mix on.

i just bought my s4 abuot a month ago and i love it.
if u got 1000 bucks to drop, do it.
so much u can do, including record live samples for production and live use.

its really easy to learn especially if you come from the production world.

thats the one. Even if you end up chucking it in, you can still get back the majority of what you've payed for it (unlike buying said numark gear)

Plus theyre both reliable brands, and both have ridiculous amounts of 2nd hand deals on ebay n shit like that.

if you want cdjs then go for 800s (cheap, reliable and mirror club settups rather well)

If you want vinyl, then go for 1200mk2 (same points as above)

I'd go for a high end system if you can, I bought one of these as soon as I had the dollar:

Digital as in CDs? 'Cause with MIDI, you're cheaper off getting the hardware. Especially if you're already a producer and have an audio interface and monitors hooked up to it.
