[Feedback] two dubstep tunes I made on my Gameboy

Post by cloak and dagger » Tue Feb 08, 2011 4:12 am

I thought some of you guys might enjoy hearing something a little different from what usually pops up here.

Both were made completely with an original model Gameboy. Sayonara Wax was made in two sessions while being trapped at a train station and trapped on a bus. Blissout was made while taking the train to and from work over about a week or so.

Hope you guys dig em! As always, any feedback is appreciated (and returned).

Haha... I dig it man, really like the panning on the melody in the first track. Pretty good for what you made them on.

Maaaaan these are awesome, brings back some good memories. Even though I'm a fan of brostep the second track is killer. How did you do this anyways? I hear a Mario sample in the second did you just record yourself playing or is there some magical mod?
Nice work man

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words! I left feedback for your tunes in your respective threads.

I made these tunes in a tracker called LSDJ which you can run on a Game Boy. The Mario-sounding thing isn't a sample actually, I synthesized it within the program. I thought it sounded too Mario-ish but kept it anyway because I liked out how it sounded =)

These are the first two tunes I made in the program (and with a tracker), so I was really out of my element...definitely a good challenge though. It's weird using hardware (GB) where you're forced to focus on melody over timbre or groove, yet using a program (LSDJ) that focuses on 1-bar segments, making it harder to write melodies!

oh, so that's a requirement? I didn't realize it was mandatory, and the system didn't really seem to fit with this post (I wasn't giving the tunes away, and wasn't necessarily looking for constructive criticism [although of course it's always welcome]), so that's why I chose the title I did. I'll keep it in mind for the next post, then.

Blissout, love the melody at 2:20.
Impressive work from a gameboy. :W:

Really impressive for being made on a gameboy. Much prefer the chilled tune to the brostep. Both are really cool though.

Thanks for listening (and commenting), everyone! Yeah I think these two are pretty much finished as they are, I feel like adding real sounds to them would ruin the vibe a bit; already played these as part of my live PA and they both got a great response! Hopefully more to come depending on how often I get stuck at train stations (it's snowing today, so this is a possibility).
