Electro Pop + Dubstep Break, tempo change needed?

Post by speakerjunky » Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:19 pm

I'm currently working on a electro pop track with a dubstep break in the middle. Kind of like the new Brittney Spears song. My song is at 128bpm, do you guys think I should stick with 128 for the dub break? Or should I do a tempo change up to 140bpm at the break and the back to 128bpm for the electro? The part I have now is cool but sounds really mellow at the bpm. Do you think the tempo change would throw people off? Any advice on smoothly transitioning between the two styles?

not having heard the track, my instinct is to bring it up to 130 across the board, no tempo change. I rather like the mellower tip of 130-135ish halftime beats.

Hey Shaney, your track is sick dude. What instruments did you use for that filthy bass line? What process do you go through to get the various movements with the bass? Do you tweak it out and then bounce it, then tweak it out then bounce another version and then put all the bounced versions in a sampler? Or do you have duplicate vsts and modify each one accordinly and the sequence? How do you do it man?

I normally don't sign in to this random account I made; I usually just creep the forums signed off, but I really wanted to give some feedback on this track :) I'm loving this tune so far, it keeps things really simple and clean which is perfect for electro pop obviously. I would not change the break one bit, I think it fits in very nicely with the song. Maybe add some incidentals, etc, but as far as tempo and groove, I think it's spot on! Great job, excited to hear how this comes out :D

Speakerjunky, biggups man. I know self advertising aint good in the production forum, but this song is a dancefloor killa.
This. I basically hate anything with that "brutal electro" sound; it sounds all like HUGLAGHALGHALGHAL

I'm actually interested in the original question. If you have an electro song at 128bpm or whatever and want to introduce a dubstep break should you do a tempo switch to 140 for that part or just leave it at 128

probably should decide for yourself concerning your own music...? Thats composing, innit?

i'd imagine its highly dependent on the music of the track in question... it will tell you what it wants to do if you listen

I would say whatever sounds good. Try both techniques. If you do the tempo change, it will give your song a unique character. It's all about experimenting as I found out for my self. I stuck with the same tempo after posting my question because I was pressed for time. On my next track I will experiment with tempo changes. I want to do a dub track at 140bpm and then switch it up to 185bpm to introduce some drum n' bass.

If you really want to fuck with the dj, add various tempo changes every 8 or 16 or 32 bars and ad some spits that say "try to beat match this"...yoy yoy wobble wobble boom boom yoy. hah! They'll be like wtf? "This song is sooooo sick but I can't seem to beat match it. Damnit!" And then post the same song with a straight tempo and charge them for the 320 lol.
